BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- Senior goaltender Michael Bitzer made stops on all 23 shots he faced to post his 21st career shutout and lead the Bemidji State University men's hockey team to a 2-0 victory at Ferris State University. The blank sheet moved him into second place in NCAA Division I hockey history.

Logging a season-high 46 shots on goal, the Beavers needed just one to get past the FSU goaltender Darren Smith. In addition to Bitzer's 23 saves, the BSU defense accounted for 21 blocked shots and its penalty-kill unit snuffed out both of FSU's power-play opportunities.

Tied 0-0 after 20 minutes of play, Jordan Heller put the Beavers in the lead at the 14:25 mark of the second period. Ethan Somoza set the senior captain up for his third goal of the season and first since Nov. 22.

Brendan Harris added an insurance goal at the 13:03 mark of third on a play from Dan Billett.

The victory extended the Beavers' WCHA unbeaten streak to 10 games, while BSU has now won seven consecutive league contests. Both marks stand as Bemidji State's longest streaks since it won eight straight league games and were unbeaten in 12 (11-0-1) to open the 2016-17 campaign--both BSU Division I-era records.

Bitzer's 21st collegiate shutout move him out of a tie with Bemidji's own Joe Fallon, who played for Vermont from 2005-08, and into sole possession of second place on the NCAA all-time shut outs list and extends his own BSU and WCHA career records. He now sits five behind Michigan State's Ryan Miller, who recorded 26 shutouts from 1999-2002

The senior goaltender improves to 12-6-6 on the season.

Bemidji State, now 12-7-6 overall and 9-4-4-2 in WCHA play, will complete its road series with Ferris State tomorrow. Opening face off is set for 6:07 p.m. (CST) from Ewigleben Ice Arena.
