BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -- Bemidji State University and Northern Michigan University needed extra time to decide the outcome of Saturday series finale. With the score tied 4-4 after 65 minutes of play and a 3-on-3-exhibition period, NMU's Robbie Payne scored on the Wildcats' first shootout attempt and goaltender Mathias Israelsson shut the door on the other end to earn the extra point in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings.
Bemidji State battled back from three different one-goal deficits to force overtime and gain a tie, but for the second consecutive night, NMU got the best of BSU in exhibition play, Saturday beating BSU 1-0 in a shoot out. After a 3-on-3 goal in the second overtime Friday, Northern Michigan left Bemidji, Minn. with a pair of ties but took four-of-six points out of the series.
T.J. Roo led a group of nine BSU players with at least a point Saturday, recording two assists to post the first multi-assist game of his career. Hampus Sjödahl and Carter Struthers each netted their first collegiate goals in the game to highlight's BSU goal soring.
Bemidji State dominated play during the first period, out shooting NMU 10-2 and owning time of possession by a significant margin, but had nothing tangible to show for it. The teams finished the first 20 minutes of play tied 1-1.
Struthers got the Beavers on the board at the 17:05 mark to tie the game just 44 seconds after the Wildcats opened the scoring.
NMU lit the lamp again just 92 seconds into the second period, as Darien Craighead scored the first of his game-high two goals on the night, to take a 2-1 lead despite logging just three shots on goal in nearly 22 minutes of play. The goal sparked a five-goal second period that, when the dust settled, would leave NMU holding a 4-3 advantage with 20 minutes to play.
Combs tied the game for the Beavers capitalizing on a Northern Michigan turnover behind their own net and pushed his own rebound under the pad of Israelsson. Sjödahl's goal with just over eight minutes to play in the period gave the Beavers their first lead of the game, but it would last just 30 seconds before Craighead struck again. Zach Diamantoni finished the period putting NMU up 4-3 at the 19:37 mark.
BSU' Myles Fitzgerald accounted for the only goal of the third period. He was on the doorstep and batted in his fourth goal of the season with help from Justin Baudry and Kyle Bauman. The power-play goal helped the Beavers finish 1-for-2 on the man advantage.
Neither team was able to separate itself during the overtime or 3-on-3 periods setting up BSU's fourth shootout of 2017-18.
Michael Bitzer gained the tie to move to 5-5-5 on the season. He posted 24 saves in 64 minutes of action.
The Beavers, now 5-6-5 overall and 2-4-4-2 in league play, will be back at Sanford Center Dec. 15-16 when it hosts the University of Alaska-Anchorage for a two-game WCHA series. The opening faceoff is set for 7:07 p.m. each night.
