Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team picked up a 4-2 win over the Lake Superior State Lakers in front of a crowd of over 2,300 fans on Saturday (Feb. 24) night in the regular-season finale at the Ewigleben Ice Arena to complete a Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) weekend sweep in Big Rapids.

With the win, FSU secured the number six seed for the upcoming WCHA Playoffs and will travel to third-seeded Bowling Green for a first-round best-of-three series Friday thru Sunday (March 2-4).

Ferris State freshman forward Coale Norris scored twice for the Bulldogs while junior goaltender Darren Smith made 30 stops for his second consecutive 30-plus save performance and victory. Ferris State honored its seven seniors prior to the game and the win in a special pregame ceremony on Senior Night.

The Lakers opened the scoring at 5:07 of the first period when Collin Saccoman notched his first goal of the year from Bryan Basilico and Brayden Gelsinger for an early 1-0 lead that lasted into the second period.

The Bulldogs evened the contest when Norris scored his first of the game and ninth of the season on a shot from the high-slot from redshirt sophomore defenseman Zach Yoder (5) and sophomore defenseman Cameron Clarke (6) at 3:43 into the middle frame.

Tied headed into the third, Norris broke the deadlock for Ferris State with his 10th goal of the year and second of the night from junior forward Trevor Recktenwald (5), giving FSU a 2-1 lead 7:37 into the final stanza.

Ferris State senior forward Mitch Maloney then fired in the eventual game-winning goal on an empty net at 17:43 of the third for his 14th goal of the year with assists to junior forward Corey Mackin (15) and sophomore defenseman Joe Rutkowski (12).

Maloney added another empty net goal 1:07 later unassisted for his 15th goal of the year, pushing the Bulldog advantage to 4-1 in the contest.

Lake Superior State scored with 26 seconds remaining as Gage Torrel pulled the Lakers within two at 4-2 before FSU preserved the win.

Ferris State finished 0-of-4 on the power play with the Falcons going 0-of-1 on the night. Mareks Mitens took the loss in net for the Lakers with 34 saves while Smith finished with 30 in earning the FSU win.

The Bulldogs will take on Bowling Green at the Slater Family Ice Arena in Bowling Green, Ohio, in the first-round series with official game times to be announced. Stay tuned to FerrisStateBulldogs.com for additional postseason information.
