Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team picked up a weekend Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) sweep over the Michigan Tech Huskies as FSU pulled out a 3-1 victory on Saturday (Jan. 27) in the series' finale before a sellout crowd at the Ewigleben Ice Arena.
Ferris State junior goaltender Darren Smith made 26 stops on the night to lead the Bulldogs while freshman forward Coale Norris scored his team-leading fourth game-winning goal of the year in the win.
The Bulldogs pulled ahead 1-0 on a power play goal when junior forward and captain Corey Mackin shoveled in a shot from the left side of the crease at 5:13 of the middle period. Senior forward Mitch Maloney (8) and junior defenseman Jacob Hetz (2) earned assists on Mackin's eighth goal of the year.
Norris put the Bulldogs up 2-0 on the rush, when junior defenseman Ryker Killins (11) rushed it end-to-end and crossed a pass from MTU goaltender Packy Munson's right to left that Norris tapped in for his seventh goal of the year at 9:52 of the second period.
Ferris State then pulled ahead 3-0 when freshmen forwards Liam MacDougall and Lucas Finner connected for a shorthanded goal at 18:58 of the second for Finner's third goal of the year and MacDougall's second assist of the weekend.
The Huskies got on the board at 13:09 of the final frame when an Alex Smith shot was stopped by FSU's Smith, but the rebound hit a Bulldog and bounced in to put the game at 3-1 in the Bulldogs' favor.
Smith held off a late charge by the Huskies and made 26 stops on the night for the victory.
MTU's Munson made 21 saves on 24 Bulldog shots in the setback.
Ferris State went 1-3 on the power play for the night and 4-8 on the man advantage for the weekend while holding the Huskies 0-5 on the night with a shorthanded goal for FSU.
Ferris State next hits the road to take on the University of Alaska Nanooks on Feb. 2-3 at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks, Alaska, starting at 11:07 p.m. (ET).
