BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team fell 2-1 despite a late charge to the nationally #8-ranked Minnesota State Mavericks on Saturday (Jan. 12) evening at the Ewigleben Ice Arena.

The Mavericks jumped on the board when Minnesota State's Dallas Gerads kicked a puck off his foot and it redirected off of his own stick, which held up after review at 2:26 of the second period.

Early in the third, Minnesota State went up 2-0 when Reggie Lutz scored at 6:23.

Ferris State put on a late charge, netting a power play goal at 15:19 of the final frame when Nate Kallen fired in his fifth of the season on a one-time shot to tie his career single-season high. Senior forward Corey Mackin (10) and freshman defenseman Cooper Zech (16) earned assists on Kallen's goal.

The Bulldogs had a chance with 25 seconds on the clock that Minnesota State goaltender Dryden McKay dove across and stopped that nearly evened the contest.

The Mavericks led in shots 44-29 for the game while Ferris State junior goaltender Justin Kapelmaster made 42 stops in a second consecutive strong effort.

Ferris State finished 1-4 on the power play and held Minnesota State 0-4.

The Bulldogs have a week off before heading to Ohio to take on the Bowling Green State Falcons on Jan. 25-26 at the Slater Family Ice Arena
