SAINT PAUL, Minn. Third period goals by defenseman Steve Czech at 6:15 and by forward T.J. Caig at 12:05 lifted the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs over Minnesota State, 6-4, here Saturday afternoon before 12,509 in the third place game of the 2003 Kellogg's WCHA Final Five at Xcel Energy Center.
The Bulldogs, now 22-15-5 overall, outshot the Mavericks, 40-27, in winning their fourth WCHA playoff game in the past nine days. UMD defeated St. Cloud State in a first round, best-of-three series a week ago, two games to one, and then knocked off North Dakota, 2-1, here Thursday night before falling to No. 1-ranked Colorado College, 4-3 (ot) on Friday night in a Final Five semi-final. MSU is now 20-10-10.
Minnesota-Duluth took a 3-1 lead after one period on goals from Tim Hambly at 3:20, Junior Lessard at 12:12 and Tyler Brosz at 19:15.
Minnesota State closed to within 4-3 in the second period following consecutive goals by Shane Joseph at 12:19 and 13:06, who also had two assists for four points.
The Bulldogs were 0-of-5 on the power-play while MSU was 3-of-4. In goal, Isaac Reichmuth had 23 stops for UMD while starter Jason Jensen (7) and Jon Volp combined for 34 for the Mavericks.
Tonight's 2003 Kellogg's WCHA Final Five championship game, set for 7:08 pm CT, features top-ranked Colorado College against sixth-ranked Minnesota. The winner of the Final Five receives the Broadmoor Trophy and an automatic berth into next week's NCAA tournament.
