ST. PAUL, Minn. - Three goals in the first 5:25 of the first period by Minnesota propelled the Gophers to a 4-2 victory over regular-season champion Colorado College and gave the school their first Broadmoor Trophy since 1996.

Minnesota jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two first-period goals by Grant Potulny and one from Gino Guyer. Tournament MVP Potulny put Minnesota up with his 11th goal at 1:29. Twenty seconds later, Guyer tallied his 12th of the season. Potulny notched his second of the game with a power-play goal at 5:25, putting Minnesota up three.

The Tigers' Brett Sterling closed the gap to 3-1 with a powew-play score at 19:46 of the second stanza, but the Gophers responded at 5:13 when Jon Waibel finished a two-on-one to regain their three-goal cushion. CC crept back to within two when League Player of the Year Peter Sejna hit the short-side upper corner on Minnesota goalie Justin Johnson while on the power play at 6:41. The Tigers held the territorial advantage the rest of the way, and outshot Minnesota 16-5 for the period, but that is as close as the No. 1 seed would get.

Total attendance for the three-day tournament ranked second in the 16-year history of the event at 72,786. The record of 75,151 was set at the 2001*02 tournament. This year's tournament put the total League attendance over 1.5 million fans in a season for the first time in history. The mark eclipsed the old record of 1,430,998 set last year.
