MADISON, Wisc. - Two teams with an opportunity to jump a couple of places in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings - University of North Dakota and University of Alaska Anchorage - will square off this Friday (Jan. 6) and Saturday (Jan. 7) at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage, Alaska in what will be the lone conference series on the opening weekend of the new year. This will also mark the only series of the season between UND and UAA.

Coach Dave Hakstol's Fighting Sioux (13-8-1, 6-6-0 WCHA), who have two games in hand on eight of the 10 member clubs, can move into sole possession of fifth place with at least two points and with a sweep could climb to within just two points of third. Coach Dave Shyiak's Seawolves (5-14-1, 3-10-1 WCHA), meanwhile, have a chance to move past both St. Cloud State and Minnesota State.

In addition to UND at UAA matchup, four other WCHA-member teams will hit the ice this week. Minnesota State (6-11-4) will play host to CCHA-member Nebraska-Omaha on Tuesday (Jan. 3) evening at the Midwest Wireless Civic Center, St. Cloud State (8-8-2) will travel east to face ECACHL-member Colgate on Friday and Saturday, Minnesota (11-5-4) will entertain College Hockey America-member Niagara on Friday and Saturday at Mariucci Arena, and Minnesota Duluth (8-10-4) will faceoff against the USA Under-18 Team on Saturday evening in an exhibition at the DECC. Colorado College, Denver, Michigan Tech and Wisconsin are all idle this week.

Over the Christmas-New Year's holiday period, three WCHA teams claimed holiday tournament championships and member teams combined for a 9-7-1 non-conference record. The no. 1-ranked Wisconsin Badgers (16-2-2) claimed the annual Badger Hockey Showdown title on Dec. 30-31 at the Kohl Center, recording a 4-1 victory over Western Michigan and a 5-1 win over Northern Michigan.
