MADISON, Wis. – The Western Collegiate Hockey Association today announced the players of the week for February 2, 2010. They are University of Denver forward Joe Colborne on offense, Denver goaltender Marc Cheverie on defense, and University of Minnesota forward Zach Budish as rookie.
Red Baron® WCHA Offensive Player of the Week
Joe Colborne – So., F, Denver
University of Denver right winger Joe Colborne, who scored both game-winning goals as the Pioneers fashioned a two-game conference road sweep at North Dakota last weekend has been named Red Baron® WCHA Offensive Player of the Week for Feb. 2, 2010. Colborne also earned the weekly honor back on Nov. 24 when DU won twice at home over UND.
A 6-5, 195-pound sophomore from Calgary, Alberta, Colborne is in the midst of a career-best, eight-game point-scoring streak during which he has produced 12 points on five goals and seven assists.
In the visiting Pioneers’ 2-0 shutout victory over North Dakota last Friday (Jan. 29) night, Colborne netted the game-winner at 1:23 of the first period. He then came back in the series finale last Saturday (Jan. 30) evening to again score the game-winning goal – this time at 17:52 of the second period – and add one assist as Denver rallied from a 2-0 deficit to claim a 4-2 triumph over UND. His assist came on a goal that tied the game at 2-2 and it was his seventh multiple-point game of the season.
In addition to his three points, Colborne finished the weekend with a team-best +3 plus/minus rating, added eight hits, and had two blocked shots.
On the season, the Boston Bruins (NHL) draftee has 26 points (11g, 15a) in 24 games played, an average of 1.08 points per game.
Also nominated this week were: Kevin Clark, F, UAA; Bill Sweatt, F, CC; Jordan Schroeder, F, UM; and Garrett Roe, F, SCSU.
Red Baron® WCHA Defensive Player of the Week
Marc Cheverie – Jr., G, Denver
For the third time this season, goaltender Marc Cheverie of the University of Denver has been named the Red Baron® WCHA Defensive Player of the Week, this time for Feb. 2, 2010. He also earned the weekly honor on Oct. 27 (vs Minnesota) and on Nov. 24 (vs North Dakota).
A 6-3, 180-pound junior from Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia and a draftee of the NHL’s Florida Panthers, Cheverie backstopped visiting Denver to 2-0 and 4-2 victories over WCHA-rival North Dakota on Jan. 29-30 in Grand Forks. He stopped 55 of 57 shots on goal in the series for a .964 saves percentage, posted four shutout periods, and blanked the Sioux on all 13 of their weekend power-play chances.
Last Friday night, Cheverie stopped all 33 shots he faced en route to Denver’s 2-0 victory over UND for his NCAA Div. 1-leading sixth shutout of the season. He also stopped all nine opponent power-play attempts.
Then last Saturday (Jan. 30), Cheverie came back to stop 22 of 24 shots on goal in the Pioneers’ 4-2 win over host North Dakota, giving Denver its first four-game, regular-season series vs the Fighting Sioux since 1992-93.
On the season, Cheverie (14-3-3, 2.01 GAA, .932 Sv%) leads the WCHA in goals-against average, saves percentage and shutouts, and is second in winning percentage (.775).

Red Baron® WCHA Rookie of the Week
Zach Budish – Fr., F, Minnesota
Zach Budish, a first-year forward at the University of Minnesota, has been honored as the Red Baron® WCHA Rookie of the Week for Feb. 2, 2010 as a result of his efforts in a two-game road series at league rival Alaska Anchorage last weekend.
A 6-3, 220-pound freshman from Edina, Minn., and a draftee of the NHL’s Nashville Predators, Budish had five points in the Golden Gophers’ split at Alaska Anchorage, including the first four-point game by any Gopher player this season.
Budish had the game-winning goal in last Friday’s 7-4 Minnesota win and also had the first three-assist game by a Minnesota player this season. He also scored the team’s lone goal in Saturday’s 2-1 loss to the Seawolves.
In addition to his five scoring points in the series, Budish finished with a +1 plus/minus rating and also fired five shots on goal.
Through 28 games played this season, Budish has seven goals and eight assists for 15 points to rank tied for fifth in scoring among Western Collegiate Hockey Association freshmen overall. He also leads the Minnesota team with a +7 plus/minus rating.
