Denver Clinches Home WCHA First Round Playoff Berth With 3-1 Victory At CC Thursday Night

MADISON, Wisc. Luke Fulghum and Gabe Gauthier scored second period goals just 5:00 apart, Connor James added an empty-netter at 19:32 of the third, and Adam Berkhoel stopped 29 of 30 shots on goal Thursday night to lead visiting University of Denver to a 3-1 conference victory over Colorado College and to a first round home WCHA Playoff berth before a sellout crowd of 7,566 at the Colorado Springs World Arena.
Also for Denver, defenseman Matt Carle had two assists, while Mark Stuart scored the lone goal for the Tigers at 10:18 of the second. The Pioneers owned a slight 32-30 edge in shots on goal in the game.
The win moves Denver (22-10-5) into fourth place in the WCHA standings with 29 points heading into the final regular season weekend, extends their nation's current best unbeaten streak to eight games (6-0-2), and guarantees the Pioneers the home advantage for a best-of-three first round WCHA playoff series at Magness Arena over the March 12-14 weekend. Colorado College (18-14-3), meanwhile, will finish seventh in the final regular season standings and will play at the No. 4 seed in the first round in two weeks.
The final WCHA home playoff berth will be decided this weekend, March 5-6, as a result of the Minnesota vs St. Cloud State two-game series that will be contested at the Golden Gophers' Mariucci Arena on Friday night and Saturday afternoon. The Huskies currently have 28 points while the Golden Gophers have 27.
