MADISON, Wisc. With the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's top annual prize the MacNaughton Cup and the regular season championship now in the possession of the University of North Dakota for the fifth time in the past eight seasons under head coach Dean Blais and for a league record 13th time overall since the league's founding in 1951 attention switches to the proverbial OEsecond season'.

The WCHA's annual post-season playoff championship will be contested this coming weekend March 12, 13 and 14 (if necessary) with five first round, best-of-three series at campus sites. No. 1-seed North Dakota (26-6-3) will host No. 10-seed Michigan Tech (8-23-5) at Ralph Engelstad Arena. Regular season runner-up and No. 2-seed Minnesota-Duluth (23-10-4) will host No. 9-seed Minnesota State (9-22-5) at the Duluth Entertainment & Convention Center. Third place WCHA finisher and No. 3-seed Wisconsin (20-10-8) will host No. 8-seed Alaska Anchorage (11-20-3) at the Kohl Center. No. 4-seed Denver (23-10-5) will host No. 7-seed Colorado College (18-15-3) at Magness Arena. And No. 5-seed Minnesota (22-13-3) will host No. 6-seed St. Cloud State (18-14-4) at Mariucci Arena. Although tied for fourth in the final regular season standings, the Pioneers earned the higher tournament seed over the Golden Gophers by virtue of a 3-1 advantage in their head-to-head regular season season series.

Interestingly, three of the five first-round playoff matchups will constitute a continuation of regular season-ending series as North Dakota again hosts Michigan Tech, Denver again engages Colorado College, and Minnesota and St. Cloud State play again.

The five first-round WCHA playoff winners will then be re-seeded one through five according to their regular season finish, and earn a trip to the 2004 Red Baron WCHA Final Five, set for Thursday, March 18th, Friday, March 19th and Saturday, March 20th at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn. Team #5 will play Team #4 on Thursday (March 18) night with the loser being eliminated. There will then be two sem-finals matchups on Friday (March 19), while Saturday (March 20) competition will feature the third place game and the Broadmoor Trophy championship game.

Play over the final week of the regular season March 2-6 saw the following key developments. North Dakota captured the MacNaughton Cup with a pair of 5-1 victories over visiting Michigan Tech.

Minnesota-Duluth gained three of four points at Wisconsin with a 2-2 overtime tie and 4-1 win to secure second place. Denver won twice over arch-rival Colorado College, 3-1 (@ CC) and 3-2 (@ Denver) to earn a share of fourth place, a home playoff berth, and the Gold Pan Trophy. Minnesota posted a 7-4, 4-2 home-ice sweep over St. Cloud State to earn a share of fourth place in the final standings and gain the final first round home playoff berth. And in non-conference play this past week, Minnesota State won twice, 5-3 and 9-1, in a home-and-home set with CCHA-member Nebraska-Omaha while host Alaska Anchorage split with CCHA-member Alaska Fairbanks, 5-4 and 4-6.

For the entire 2003-04 conference season, a total of 51 of the 140 conference games played, or 36%, were decided by one goal or less. In the 2002-03 season, 62 of the 140 total conference games, or 44%, were decided by one goal or less.

The ice shall be resurfaced upon completion of regulation play, as well as after each succeeding 20-minute overtime period. MacNaughton Cup an Elusive Goal for Teams Aiming at Regular Season Title Repeat

For the sixth consecutive season, a different team has won the WCHA regular season championship and MacNaughton Cup. North Dakota was crowned the 2003-04 WCHA champion following the Fighting Sioux's 5-1 victory over Michigan Tech last Friday (March 5) in Grand Forks, taking over from Colorado College. The CC Tigers claimed the MacNaughton Cup in 2002-03, Denver won in the title in the league's 50th Anniversary Season of 2001-02, North Dakota won the crown in 2000-01, Wisconsin captured the OECup in 1999-2000, and North Dakota claimed the top prize in 1998-99. Interestingly, the last three league championship teams have all finished with an identical 43 points in the final standings.

Since the league's founding in 1951, there have been back-to-back regular season champions only nine times in 51 seasons. Those occured in 1953 (co-) and 1954 (Minnesota), 1960 and 1961 (Denver), 1963 and 1964 (Denver was co-champion each season), 1972 and 1973 (Denver), 1979 and 1980 (North Dakota), 1984 and 1985 (Minnesota-Duluth), 1988 and 1989 (Minnesota), 1994, 1995 and 1996 (Colorado College), and in 1997 (co-), 1998 and 1999 (North Dakota). Only Colorado College (1994-96), under coach Don Lucia, and North Dakota (1997-99), under coach Dean Blais, have been able to claim the league's regular season crown three successive times since 1951.

Bochenski, Lessard Share WCHA Scoring Championship; Bruckler Tops Goaltenders

The 2003-04 WCHA scoring championship came down to the final game of the regular season championship and as a result, the title is being shared led by junior winger Brandon Bochenski of University of North Dakota and senior winger Junior Lessard of University of Minnesota-Duluth. Both players completed the 28-game league season with 39 points. Bochenski (Blaine, Minn.) had 16 goals and 23 assists while Lessard (St. Joseph deBeauce, Que.) had 19 goals and 20 assists.

This marks the fourth time in league history (since 1951), and first time since 1997-98, that two players have shared the scoring title. The others occured in 1977-78 when Wisconsin's Mark Johnson and Mike Eaves both finished with 70 points, in 1996-97 when Colorado College's Brian Swanson and Minnesota's Mike Crowley (D) each had 42 points, and in 1997-98 when Minnesota's Reggie Berg and CC's Brian Swanson both had 34 points.

The 2003-04 WCHA goaltending championship, meanwhile, was won by University of Wisconsin junior Bernd Bruckler. Bruckler (Graz, Austria) finished the conference schedule with a 2.11 goals-against average to outdistance North Dakota freshman Jordan Parise at 2.14.
