Red Baron WCHA Men's Offensive Players of the Week

David Lundbohm
Sr, C, North Dakota
and
Thomas Vanek
So, W, Minnesota

Two forwards who helped their respective teams to key two-game conference sweeps over the weekend University of North Dakota center David Lundbohm and University of Minnesota winger Thomas Vanek have been named Red Baron WCHA Offensive Players of the Week for March 8-14.

Lundbohm, a 6-1, 194-pound senior from Roseau, Minn., led the No. 1-ranked Sioux to a pair of 5-1 victories over visiting Michigan Tech on March 5-6 with three goals, two assists and five scoring points. He had two goals and an assist in last Friday's WCHA regular season championship-clinching win and then added another goal and assist in the victory on Saturday. In addition to his five points, Lundbohm had 10 shots on goal and earned a +2 plus-minus rating. On the season, Lundbohm has 15-13=28 in 33 games.

Vanek, a 6-2, 207-pound sophomore from Graz, Austria, had two goals and two assists to propel Minnesota to a 7-4, 4-2 sweep over visiting St. Cloud State on March 5-6. He scored two goals including the game-winner last Friday and added an assist and then also had an assist on the game-winning goal on Saturday. UM's leading scorer this season with 21-20=41, he had 10 shots on goal in the series and his four points moved him into UM's career 100-point club with 52-51=103.

Also nominated this week were: Curtis Glencross, F, UAA; and Chris Conner, F, MTU.

Red Baron WCHA Men's Rookie of the Week

Chris Porter
Fr, F, North Dakota

University of North Dakota left winger Chris Porter, who produced four scoring points to help the top-ranked and host Fighting Sioux to a two-game sweep over Michigan Tech and on to the 2004 WCHA championship, has been named Red Baron WCHA Rookie of the Week for March 8-14. Porter also earned the weekly honor back on Dec. 29.

A 6-2, 205-pound freshman from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Porter scored one goal and assisted on three others for four points in the two 5-1 conference victories over the Huskies, had five shots on goal, and earned a +2 plus-minus rating.

He scored the game-opening goal and had a second period assist last Friday (March 5) night as North Dakota clinched their fifth WCHA championship in the past eight years and league record 13th overall. Porter then returned on Saturday (March 6) evening to set up two more UND goals, with one of his assists coming on teammate Nick Fuher's eventual game-winning goal in the second period.

On the 2003-04 season, Porter ranks sixth among WCHA rookies in scoring overall with nine goals, 14 assists and 23 points in 35 games played.

Also nominated this week were: Charlie Kronschnabel, F, UAA; Matt Carle, D, Denver; Marek Dora, D, MTU; Danny Irmen, F, UM; Josh Johnson, G, UMD; and Jake Dowell, F, UW.

Red Baron WCHA Men's Defensive Player of the Week

Adam Berkhoel
Sr, G, Denver

University of Denver goaltender Adam Berkhoel, who backstopped his team to a two-game sweep in a crucial conference series against arch-rival Colorado College last weekend, has been named Red Baron WCHA Defensive Player of the Week for March 8-14. Berkhoel was previously honored with the weekly award on Oct. 7 & Dec. 1.

A 5-11, 190-pound senior from Woodbury, Minn., Berkhoel stopped 56 of 60 shots on goal in the two wins over the Tigers for a .933 saves percentage, blanked CC on all nine of their series power-play opportunities, and posted three shutout periods. Denver ran their nation's current best unbeaten streak to nine games (7-0-2) with the two wins, earned fourth place in the WCHA, and gained the home-ice advantage for this week's first-round WCHA playoffs.

Berkhoel stopped 29 of 30 shots on goal in a 3-1 victory at Colorado College last Thursday (March 4) night and then came back last Friday at Magness Arena to make 27 saves as the Pioneers posted a 3-2 triumph over the Tigers. Denver won the regular-season series against CC, 3-1, which brought the Gold Pan Trophy back to Denver.

On the season, Berkhoel owns a 20-9-4 record, 2.49 GAA and .918 SV%. During Denver's nine-game unbeaten streak, he is 7-0-2 with a 1.96 GAA and .933 SV%.
