March 28, 2008

The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team saw its season end on March 28, with a 2-1 loss to Clarkson University at the 2008 NCAA East Regional in Albany, N.Y. at the Times-Union Center.

SCSU finishes its season with a 19-16-5 overall record. Clarkson will advance to the Regional final on March 29 against the winner of tonight's Michigan-Niagara game.

In the first period, both teams skated to a 0-0 tie as Jase Weslosky made 15 saves for the Huskies and David Leggio had 11 saves for the Golden Knights. The Huskies had three power play opportunities in the first period, but they failed to convert on them. On the other side of the bench, Clarkson had no power play chances. The lone SCSU penalty was an offsetting penalty at the end of the period by Matt Hartman and CU's Shea Guthrie for hitting after the whistle.

The Huskies gained a 1-0 lead in the second period as sophomore defender Garrett Raboin (Detroit Lakes) scored at 4:08. He was assisted on the even-strength goal by freshman forward Garrett Roe (Vienna, Va.) and senior forward Matt Hartman (St. Cloud/Apollo H.S.).

Raboin connected on a shot from just inside the blueline that beat CU netminder Leggio. This was Raboin's third goal of the season for the Huskies, and his second consecutive game with a goal.

Clarkson knotted the game at 1-1 at 14:15 of the second period with a goal by David Cayer. Bryan Rufenach gained the assist on the play, which resulted in a quirky bouncing shot that beat SCSU netminder Weslosky. In the second period, SCSU was outshot 14-5 by the Golden Knights. CU was 0-of-3 on the power play in the period, and the Huskies were 0-of-1 on the advantage in the second period.

In the third period at 4:58, CU's Shea Guthrie scored to make the score 2-1, which proved to be the game winner for the Golden Knights.

SCSU was outshot 40-25 in the game. Weslosky made 38 saves in the contest, and Leggio had 24 saves for CU. On the power play, SCSU was 0-of-6 and Clarkson was 0-of-6.

The victory moves CU into the Regional championship match against the winner tonight's game between top seed Michigan and four seed Niagara. The regional championship game will be played on Saturday, March 29 at 7 p.m. at the Times-Union Center in Albany, N.Y. The game will be televised nationally on ESPNU.

This marked the seventh time in SCSU history that the Huskies have earned a bid to the NCAA Division I tournament. The Huskies also gained bids in 1989, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2008. This was the first time that SCSU and Clarkson have played in NCAA tournament play.
