TAMPERE, Finland - Forward Kelly Fairchild (Eisbaren Berlin/Univ. of Wisconsin) notched a hat trick as the 2003 United States Men's National Team (3-3-0) posted an 8-1 victory versus Japan here today in the Relegation Round at the 2003 International Ice Hockey Federation Men's World Championship. The U.S., which was assured of a 13th place finish and a spot in Division I of the 2004 IIHF World Championship prior to the contest, recorded its highest scoring output at an IIHF World Championship since a 9-4 defeat of Norway on April 23, 1990.
The United States jumped out to a 1-0 lead 3:13 into the contest, as forward Peter Ferraro (Portland Pirates) scored his first goal of the tournament off an assist from brother Chris Ferraro (Portland Pirates). Team USA doubled its lead with a power-play marker early in the second period, as forward Craig Johnson (Los Angeles Kings/Univ. of Minnesota) also tallied his first goal of the tournament.
After Japan cut the U.S. lead to 2-1 with an even-strength goal, Fairchild responded with a pair of goals 2:43 apart late in the second stanza. Phil Housley (Toronto Maple Leafs) earned the assist on Fairchild's first score, while Peter Ferraro assisted on Fairchild's second goal.
The Americans sealed the victory with four goals in a 5:25 span in the third period. Forward Brad DeFauw (Carolina Hurricanes/Univ. of North Dakota) gave the U.S. a 5-1 lead with his first goal of the tournament, and forward Marty Reasoner (Edmonton Oilers) tallied an even-strength goal at 8:25 of the period. Fairchild completed the hat trick at 10:33 with a power-play marker, and Johnson's second goal of the contest at 12:04 produced the final margin.
U.S. goaltender Chris Rogles (Cologne Sharks) recorded his first victory, stopping 28 of 29 shots. Jiro Igor Nihei saved 36 shots for Japan in the loss.
