ST. CLOUD, Minn. St. Cloud State University men¹s ice hockey recruit Michael Olson was recently named the Canadian Junior A Player of the Year. A standout player for the Nanaimo Clippers of the BCHL, Olson is the first-ever SCSU player or recruit to gain this prestigious honor.

He joins several top NHL and NCAA players who have also been selected as the CJAHL's Player of the Year such as Dany Heatly, Junior Lesssard and Mike Comrie. Of note, former SCSU standout Mark Hartigan was a runner-up for the CJAHL award during the 1997-98 campaign.

Olson, 20, totalled 32 goals and 70 points in 60 regular-season games as Nanaimo finished first in the BCHL's Island Division, Coastal Conference and overall with a 48-9-3 record - a franchise record for wins.

Olson was chosen captain of the Coastal Conference team in the BCHL all-star game. He also earned three Major Team Awards including Most Popular Player, MVP and the Coach's Award.

Olson, a resident of Tisdale, Sask., finished his third season in the BCHL since leading the Tisdale to the Air Canada Cup midget AAA national championship in 2002.
