Mankato, Minn. - Minnesota State sophomore defenseman Steven Johns has been named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District V At Large First Team.

Johns, who will now have his name appear on the national ballot for Academic All-America, carries a 3.87 grade point average in his international business studies.

Also a member of the WCHA All-Academic Team, Johns played a key role in a successful 2002-03 campaign by the Maverick men's hockey team. The Cranbrook, B.C., native ranked sixth in league scoring by defensemen (1-21=22) and was fifth on the team with two goals and 24 assists for 26 points in . A two-time member of MSU's Dean's List, Johns has totalled three goals and 43 assists for 46 points in 75 career games. He scored the 5,000th goal in school history when he got the game-winner in a 3-1 win over Bemidji State (11/02/02) during the 2002-03 season.

MSU finished the 2003 campaign with a 20-11-10 record, finished in a tie for second place in the WCHA regular season, earned a first round league play-off sweep over Wisconsin to advance the WCHA Final Five and capped things off with its first-ever invitation to the NCAA Division I postseason tournament.
