Mankato, Minn. ­- Minnesota State junior forward David Backes has been selected to the ESPN Magazine Academic All-District Five First Team.

As a member of the First Team, Backes now will go under consideration for Academic All-America honors.

A 2005-06 Second Team All-American, Backes signed a professional contract with the National Hockey League's St. Louis Blues following the 2005-06 campaign. The Blaine, Minn., native missed one game in his three-year collegiate career and tallied a career-high for points with 42 this season.

Named 2005-06 All-WCHA Second Team, he was a member of the 2004-05 All-WCHA Third Team and a member of the 2003-04 WCHA All-Rookie Team. The two-time WCHA All-Academic selection totalled 46-73--119 in 115 career games to rank 23rd on MSU's all-time scoring list. His career totals rank third on MSU scoring during the Division I era. He was a two-time team MVP and two-time team scoring champion. He owns a 4.00 grade point average and is majoring in electrical engineering.
