DENVER - The back-to-back NCAA National Champion University of Denver hockey team will open its 2005-06 season at the University of Maine on Oct. 14-15, it was announced today by National Coach of the Year George Gwozdecky. Denver will play 16 of its 36 regular-season games against opponents which finished in the top 15 of the final 2005 USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll. The Pioneers will play four games each against 2005 Frozen Four participants Minnesota, North Dakota and Colorado College. Denver will also host its annual Wells Fargo Denver Cup in December. The four-team Denver Cup field includes Boston College (Hockey East), Ferris State (CCHA) and Princeton (ECAC).
The Pioneers will open their home schedule against Notre Dame at Magness Arena on Oct. 22 and host Michigan Tech in a two-game WCHA series on Nov. 4-5. Denver will also host league games against Minnesota (Nov. 18-19), Colorado College (Dec. 3 and March 3), Alaska Anchorage (Dec. 9-10), St. Cloud State (Jan. 13-14), Minnesota State (Feb. 10-11) and North Dakota (Feb. 24-25).
The Pioneers will entertain one of their most competitive road schedules in recent history. In addition to its two-game series at Maine on Oct. 14-15, Denver travels to North Dakota (Oct. 28-29), Minnesota State (Nov. 11-12), Boston University (Nov. 25), University of Massachusetts (Nov. 26), Colorado College (Dec. 2 and March 2), Minnesota Duluth (Dec. 16-17), Wisconsin (Jan. 20-21), Alaska Anchorage (Jan. 27-28) and Minnesota (Feb. 17-18).
The Pioneers captured their seventh NCAA national championship last season with a 32-9-2 overall record. The Pioneers return 14 letterwinners from last year¹s championship team, including CCM All-Americans Matt Carle (Anchorage, Alaska), Gabe Gauthier (Buena Park, Calif.) and Brett Skinner (Brandon, Manitoba). WCHA Rookie of the Year Paul Stastny (St. Louis, Mo.) and Frozen Four Most Outstanding Player Peter Mannino (Farmington Hills, Mich.) also return for their sophomore seasons as Denver aims for its third consecutive NCAA title.
Season tickets for 2005-06 Denver hockey are currently on sale. Back-to-back NCAA National Champion Pioneer hockey offers some of the most affordable entertainment in the Denver metro area. Season ticket prices begin at $315 for 21 Pioneer home games. The University of Denver is also offering its half season "Power Pack" ticket packages that begin at $150 for 10 games.
Individual game tickets go on sale Saturday, Sept. 10 at 10 a.m., with prices ranging from $17-$24 for adults and children's tickets beginning at $10. Student season tickets go on sale Saturday, Sept. 17 at 9 a.m. Tickets for Denver's two Colorado College games at Magness Arena (Dec. 3 and March 3) carry a $5 premium.
