MADISON, Wisc. The Western Collegiate Hockey Association, home to a record 33 national championship teams since 1951, and Commissioner Bruce M. McLeod today released the 2003-04 men's composite schedule, highlighted by a fourth consecutive appearance of the WCHA Final Five at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn., next March 18-20.

"We're thrilled at the success the Final Five has generated for us in the past," said McLeod, "and we look forward to continuing to build on that tradition in the future. We couldn't be happier with our partnerships with the Minnesota Wild and the Xcel Energy Center and combined with our intensely-competitive group of 10 teams, fans can be assured of another special championship next March."

The WCHA Final Five, which has drawn 618,222 fans since it's inception in 1993, has enjoyed record crowds the past three seasons at Xcel Energy Center. The championship's first appearance there in 2001 drew 67,612 to break the previous high of 61,367 set in 1994 at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee. In 2002, while celebrating the league's 50th anniversary campaign, the Final Five drew a record 75,151 while in 2003, the event was attended by 72,786. Over the past 16 years, the WCHA Playoff Championship including the four-team format from 1988-92 and the five team format since 1993 has drawn 856,472. Details on tickets for the 2004 WCHA Final Five will be released later this summer.

"We think the upcoming 2003-04 season will be another special one," added McLeod. "You look at the quality of teams, coaches and student-athletes in the WCHA over the years and next season will be no different. We've been fortunate to enjoy very special back-to-back seasons with the 50th anniversary year of 2001-02 and a 2002-03 season that saw Minnesota win our 33rd national championship, have five teams ranked among the nation's top 15 in the final poll, have five teams earn NCAA tournament berths, have seven teams with winning records, have a successful (57-27-8) non-conference record, have Peter Sejna win the Hobey Baker (Memorial) Award, have seven All-Americans, and become the first college hockey league in history to surpass 1.5 million in attendance and you can't help but feel blessed." In addition, the WCHA also hosted Team Italy for a five-game holiday tour and had 58 alums playing in the National Hockey League.

That long-standing WCHA tradition of hosting international teams which dates to 1958-59 will also continue in 2003-04 when a Latvian National Team visits the conference for a holiday tour. Tentative dates (subject to change) are Dec. 12th at Minnesota, Dec. 14th at Wisconsin and Dec. 16th at Minnesota-Duluth. Since 1958, the WCHA has hosted teams from Austria, Czechoslovakia, Finland, France, Italy, Japan, Norway, Poland, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, and West Germany.

What promises to be another competitive 140-game race for the conference's regular season championship and MacNaughton Cup kicks off the weekend of Oct. 17-18 when St. Cloud State hosts Wisconsin at the National Hockey Center. 2002-03 MacNaughton Cup champion Colorado College will open defense of its title on Oct. 31-Nov. 1 when the Tigers host Minnesota State at the Colorado Springs World Arena. Other key dates for CC include home-and-home series with arch-rival Denver on Nov. 7-8 and March 4-5, a Jan. 9-10 home matchup with defending NCAA champion Minnesota and a Feb. 13-14 road series at North Dakota. League openers for the rest of the WCHA are as follows: Alaska Anchorage (Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at Minnesota-Duluth); Denver (Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at Minnesota); Michigan Tech (Oct. 24-25 at St. Cloud State); Minnesota (Oct. 24-25 vs Minnesota-Duluth); Minnesota-Duluth (Oct. 24-25 at Minnesota); Minnesota State (Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at Colorado College); and North Dakota (Nov. 7-8 vs Minnesota). In 2002-03, a total of 62 or 44% of the 140 league games were decided by one-goal or less.

WCHA teams will host and play in a total of 11 tournaments across the country during the 2003-04 season. Hosting tournaments will be Alaska Anchorage, Denver, Michigan Tech, Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin. The Seawolves welcome Air Force, Miami and UMass-Lowell to the Nye Frontier Classic at Sullivan Arena on Oct. 17-18; the Pioneers host Nebraska-Omaha, Niagara and Yale at the Wells Fargo Denver Cup at Magness Arena on Dec. 27-28; the Huskies host Boston College, Michigan and Michigan State at the Great Lakes Invitational at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Mich., on Dec. 27-28; the Golden Gophers entertain Miami, New Hampshire and Princeton at the Mariucci Classic at Mariucci Arena on Dec. 20-21; the Fighting Sioux welcome Brown, Findlay and Wayne State to their holiday tournament at Ralph Engelstad Arena on Dec. 27-28; and the Badgers bring their annual Badger Hockey Showdown to the Kohl Center in Madison for the first time when they host Ferris State, UMass-Lowell, and Union College on Dec. 27-28.
