Mankato, Minn. - Minnesota State junior forward David Backes has been selected 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men's At-Large First Team.

Backes, who signed a professional contract with the National Hockey League's St. Louis Blues following the 2005-06 campaign, becomes the 27th student-athlete in the history of MSU to gain Academic All-America honors.

Earlier named to the 2005-06 RBK Second Team All-America team, Backes missed one game in his three-year collegiate career. A native of Blaine, Minn., Backes tallied a career-high for points with 42 this season. Named 2005-06 All-WCHA Second Team, he was a member of the 2004-05 All-WCHA Third Team and a member of the 2003-04 WCHA All-Rookie Team. The two-time WCHA All-Academic selection totalled 46-73--119 in 115 career games to rank 23rd on MSU's all-time scoring list. His career totals rank third on MSU scoring during the Division I era. He was a two-time team MVP and two-time team scoring champion. He owns a 4.00 grade point average and is majoring in electrical engineering.
