DENVER - The University of Denver hockey team will open its 2006-07 season at the Ice Breaker Tournament against host Miami University on Oct. 6, it was announced today by two-time National Coach of the Year George Gwozdecky. The Pioneers will play 17 of their regular-season games against opponents which finished in the top 15 of the final 2006 USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll. DU will play four games each against 2006 NCAA National Champion Wisconsin and Colorado College. In addition to the 14th Annual Wells Fargo Denver Cup on December 29-30, the Pioneers welcome back former assistant coach Seth Appert and the RPI Engineers for a two-game series during Homecoming and Hall of Fame weekend on Oct. 20-21.
The Pioneers' home schedule is highlighted by a two-game series against the defending champion Badgers on Jan. 5-6. DU also hosts 2006 Frozen Four participant North Dakota on Feb. 23-24 and in-state rival Colorado College on Dec. 1 and March 2. The Pioneers welcome WCHA opponents' Michigan Tech (Nov. 17-18), Minnesota State (Dec. 8-9), St. Cloud State (Jan. 26-27) and Minnesota Duluth (Feb. 2-3) to Magness Arena. Opponents from three competitive conferences highlight the Wells Fargo Denver Cup in late December. Brown (ECACHL), Mercyhurst (Atlantic Hockey) and UMass-Lowell (Hockey East) will participate in the annual holiday tournament that dates back to the 1992-93 season. DU also hosts Niagara (Jan. 12-13), Air Force (Nov. 24) and Robert Morris (Nov. 25) of College Hockey America (CHA) in non-conference action.
The Pioneers season opener against the host RedHawks will be played at the new state-of-the-art 3,200 seat Miami Ice Arena. Gwozdecky and former DU assistant coach and current Miami head coach Enrico Blasi reunite for the first time since the 2003-04 season when DU knocked off the RedHawks, 3-2, at the NCAA West Regional in Colorado Springs. The Pioneers will battle Colgate (ECACHL) or Vermont (Hockey East) in game two of the Ice Breaker Tournament. Denver travels to St. Cloud State (Oct. 13-14), Minnesota Duluth (Oct. 27-28), Wisconsin (Nov. 10-11), Colorado College (Dec. 1 & March 3), Alaska Anchorage (Dec. 15-16), Minnesota (Jan. 19-20) and Michigan Tech (Feb. 9-10) for its annual Winter Carnival.
The Pioneers (21-15-3, 17-8-3 WCHA) finished tied for second place in the WCHA with Wisconsin. DU returns 17 letterwinners from last year's team, including RBK West All-American and WCHA Scoring Champion Paul Stastny (St. Louis, Mo.), All-WCHA Third Team selection Ryan Dingle (Steamboat Springs, Colo.), All-WCHA Rookie Team member Chris Butler (St. Louis, Mo.) and senior captain Adrian Veideman (Sicamous, British Columbia).
Season tickets for 2006-07 Denver Pioneers are currently on sale. DU hockey offers some of the most affordable entertainment in the Denver metro area. Season ticket prices begin at $390 for 26 Pioneer home games. The University of Denver is once again offering its half season "Power Pack" ticket packages that begin at $195 for 13 games.
Individual game tickets go on sale Saturday, Sept. 9 at 10 a.m., with prices ranging from $17-$24 for adults and children's tickets beginning at $10. Tickets for Denver's two Colorado College games at Magness Arena (Dec. 2 and March 2) carry a $5 premium.
