OTTAWA - Forty-five Americans were selected during the recently completed 2008 National Hockey League Entry Draft in Ottawa, Ontario. Five Americans were chosen in the first round including Zach Bogosian (Massena, N.Y.) who, as the third overall selection by the Atlanta Thrashers, was the first American-born player drafted.
Colin Wilson (Greenwich, Conn./Boston Univ.), a veteran of USA Hockey's National Team Development Program, was selected seventh by the Nashville Predators, making him the first American collegiate player drafted.
Jake Gardiner (Deephaven, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.), the 17th overall pick by the Anaheim Ducks, was the first American high school player drafted in 2008, while John Carlson (Colonia, N.J.) of the United States Hockey League's Indiana Ice, was the first player drafted from a domestic Junior hockey league when he was selected 27th overall by the Washington Capitals.
To close out the first round, Thomas McCollum (Sanborn, N.Y.) became the first American-born goaltender to be selected in the first round since Al Montoya was taken sixth overall in 2004. McCollum was the 30th overall pick by the Detroit Red Wings.
NOTES: Nine players currently playing NCAA hockey were selected ... A total of 10 players currently playing in domestic junior hockey leagues were chosen, including nine from the United State Hockey League and one from the Eastern Junior Hockey League ... Fourteen players from domestic high schools or prep schools were selected ... A total of 10 players with ties to USA Hockey's National Team Development Program were chosen during the 2008 NHL Entry Draft ... Players representing 19 states including Alaska, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia, were drafted.
