Jay Cascalenda, an offensive-minded defenseman who spent last winter patrolling the blueline for the United States Hockey League's Indiana Ice, has signed a national letter of intent to attend and play hockey for the University of Minnesota Duluth in 2005-06.

Cascaleda, who turned 20 yesterday (July 10), was credited with one goal and 18 assists while skating in all 60 regular season games last season. The 19 points were eclipsed by only two other Indiana defensemen and were good for the No. 11 spot on the Ice scoring charts.

Cascalenda, a 6-0, 180-pound native of West St. Paul, was traded to Indiana from the Waterloo Black Hawks prior to the start of the 2004-05 season. He skated in 11 outings (picking up one assist in the process) with that USHL franchise in 2003-04 immediately after concluding his four-year playing career at St. Paul's Hill-Murray High School.

A three-time All-Classic Suburban Conference selection (2001-04), Cascalenda captained the Pioneers as both a junior and senior. He skated at the forward position in 2001-02 when the Pioneers captured runnerup honors at the Minnesota State Class AA Tournament before moving back to the point during his junior season.

The addition of Cascalenda boosts the 2005-06 Bulldog recruiting class back up to 11 -- the largest in school history. Late last week a previous Bulldog recruit, forward Jared Boll (who committed to UMD this past spring), joined the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League.

UMD posted a 15-17-6 overall record in 2004-05 and was 11-13-4 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play (sixth place).
