COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - USA Hockey today announced the 20-player roster and the coaching staff for the 2003 United States Under-18 Select Team that will compete in the 2003 Under-18 Junior World Cup, to be held August 11-16 in Piestany, Slovakia and Breclav, Czech Republics. The U.S. will face Under-18 Select Teams from Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden and Switzerland.
Last August the U.S. Under-18 Select Team placed fifth with a 3-2-0 overall record at the event.
The announcement was made by USA Hockey President Ron DeGregorio (Salem, N.H.), Vice President & Youth Council Chairman John Dotte (Fort Covington, N.Y.), Treasurer & Player Development Committee Chairman Jim Smith (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) and Director, Youth Ice Hockey Kevin McLaughlin (Colorado Springs, Colo.).
The U.S. team is composed of players chosen from the 2003 USA Hockey Select 17 Festival, which was held July 12-17 at the National Hockey Center on the campus of St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn., and featured many of America's best ice hockey players born in 1986.
The annual Select 17 Festival provides players with concentrated on- and off-ice training and instruction, as well as the opportunity to compete at a national level against other top players from their age group. The tournament featured 12 teams comprised of 20 players representing each of USA Hockey's 11 Districts.
The U.S. Under-18 Select Team roster features five players from Team Massachusetts which won the gold medal at the Festival with a 1-0 shutout of Minnesota: goaltender Cory Schneider (Marblehead, Mass.), who kept Minnesota scoreless in the second half of the championship game; defensemen Dan McGoff (Charlestown, Mass.) and Keith Yandle (Milton, Mass.); and forwards Alex Berry (Danver, Mass.) and Gerald Pollastrone (Revere, Mass.). Schneider finished the Festival ranked first among all goaltenders with a .969 save percentage.
Also selected to the roster was the Festival's leading scorer from Team Mid-American, Tyler Haskins (Perry, Ohio), who notched seven points (4-3) in six games.
Seven players, forwards Mike Karwoski (Greenlawn, N.Y.), Chris Mueller (West Seneca, N.Y.), Jeff Prough (Dearborn Heights, Mich) and Haskins; and defensemen Jack Hillen (Minnetonka, Minn.), Brett Motherwell (Novi, Mich.) and McGoff were members of the 2002 U.S. Under-17 Select Team that won a gold medal at the Five Nations Tournament last summer in Slovakia.
Troy Jutting (North Makato, Minn.) will serve as head coach of the 2003 U.S. Under-18 Select Team, while Paul Caufield (Mosinee, Wis.) and Andy Slaggert (South Bend, Ind.) were named assistant coaches. Kevin McLaughlin (Colorado Springs, Colo.) will serve as USA Hockey Staff Liaison.
Jutting is entering his fourth season as men's head coach of Minnesota State University-Mankato. During the 2002-03 campaign, he was named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) Coach of the Year, leading the Mavericks to a 17-game unbeaten streak during the regular season, a second-place finish in the WCHA regular-season standings and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. He graduated from MSU-Mankato with a business degree in 1987 and earned a master's degree in sports administration in 1996. Jutting spent 10 seasons as an assistant coach with the Mavericks program prior to being selected as head coach in the summer of 2000.
Caufield will begin his third season as an assistant coach for the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the upcoming season. The all-time leading scorer in Wisconsin-Stevens Point history, he amassed 254 points with the Pointers from 1989-92, earning First Team All-American honors as both a junior and a senior. Previously, he served as head coach at Marian College in Fond du Lac, Wis., guiding the Sabres' young program to a 26-20-1 record in two seasons.
Slaggert, a former player at the University of Notre Dame, will embark on his 11th season as an assistant coach with the Fighting Irish hockey program in 2003-04. His main duties include working with the team's forwards and heading up Notre Dame's recruiting program. Slaggert is no stranger to USA Hockey, having coached several teams from Michigan at the Select Festivals, including the 2000 Select 15 Festival, the 1998 Select 16 Festival and the 1997 Select 15 Festival.
