2008 Red Baron WCHA Final Five Information

Saint Paul will play host to the conference's championship tournament for the 16th time in March, while Xcel Energy Center will host the championship for the eighth consecutive season. Saint Paul is the birthplace of the modern-era WCHA Playoff Championship, which began in 1987 as a four-team format and then became the WCHA Final Five in 1993.

"There are still good seats available for the 2008 Red Baron WCHA Final Five," said WCHA Commissioner Bruce M. McLeod, "so we want to encourage fans to order their tickets early as we anticipate another tremendously popular event next March."

Xcel Energy Center and the Western Collegiate Hockey Association announced in 2006 a contract extension that will keep the Red Baron WCHA Final Five championship tournament at Xcel Energy Center through 2011. In addition, Red Baron Pizza, currently in the fifth year of a title sponsorship agreement with the WCHA, also renewed it's title sponsorship in 2006 for five more years. This year's tournament is titled the 2008 Red Baron WCHA Final Five.

"The WCHA is extremely pleased with our on-going partnership with Xcel Energy Center and the Minnesota Wild," said McLeod, "and with our title sponsorship agreement with Red Baron and The Schwan Food Company. The Red Baron WCHA Final Five is one of the premier events in college hockey and we are thrilled to be calling Xcel Energy Center our home through 2011."

The 2007 Red Baron WCHA Final Five at Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul drew a record attendance of 88,900, with four of the five games contested also setting tournament attendance records. The largest crowd in Final Five history – a sellout of 19,463 – attended last season's Broadmoor Trophy championship game between eventual champion Minnesota and North Dakota. Other record-setting crowds last spring included a sellout of 19,359 for the Friday night semi-final, 17,511 for the Friday afternoon semi-final, and 16,449 for the Thursday evening quarterfinal matchup.

Eight WCHA Playoff Championships were held at the Saint Paul Civic Center from 1988-93, in 1995, and in 1997. Six winners of the tournament have gone on to win the national championship, including Wisconsin in 1990, Northern Michigan in 1991, North Dakota in 1997 and 2000, Minnesota in 2003, and Denver in 2005. The winner of the Final Five and Broadmoor Trophy receives an automatic berth into the NCAAs.
