MADISON, Wisc. - As the Western Collegiate Hockey Association proudly marks its 50th anniversary season in 2001-02, the league's year-long birthday celebration has now taken on even more meaning for University of North Dakota Faculty Represen- tative Phil Harmeson, this year's Chair of the WCHA.

Angie Harmeson (UND, '01), daughter of Phil and Bonnie Harmeson and a first- year med student at the university, was proposed to by Harry Wood at center ice during the second intermission of last Friday's (Oct. 12) season-opening conference game between North Dakota and Colorado College. A sellout crowd of 11,500 witnessed the defending MacNaughton Cup-champion Fighting Sioux defeat the pre-season favorite Tigers, 6-2, as well as Wood's proposal.

"I have to give Harry a lot of credit for coming up with both an appropriate and unique way to show his love for Angie," said Harmeson. "And as you can imagine, her mother and I are very proud parents."

Harmeson said the couple began their serious relationship at the 2001 NCAA Men's Frozen Four in Albany, N.Y., last April, where UND wound up finishing second in the national championship. They had been acquainted for many years, but the spark ignited during the games and events surrounding the tournament. And the would-be groom knew this might be the right woman for him when he asked her out to dinner upon their return to North Dakota and she expressed her desire to watch a Stanley Cup hockey game with him on TV instead.

"Obviously, wonderful things happen at WCHA events besides great hockey," added Harmeson. "It's going to be quite a year."
