MADISON, Wisc. - The first two series of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's 28 games-per-team 2005-06 conference schedule will be contested over the upcoming weekend (Oct. 21-22) as St. Cloud State hosts Wisconsin at the National Hockey Center and Minnesota entertaining Minnesota State at Mariucci Arena.

Each WCHA-member team will play four games (two home, two away) against five other conference member teams and two games (either home or away) vs four other conference member teams for a total of 28 league games. The winner of the regular season championship, based on total points, will receive the MacNaughton Cup. In 2004-05, Denver and Colorado College tied for the title and were declared co-champions. The six other WCHA-member teams will open their conference schedules over the weekend of Oct. 28-29, when Alaska Anchorage heads to Wisconsin, Colorado College plays at Minnesota State, Denver travels to North Dakota, and Michigan Tech hosts Minnesota Duluth.

The remainder of the upcoming weekend's schedule (Oct. 21-23) consists of a series of non-conference matchups. Minnesota Duluth plays at Hockey East Association-member Vermont, North Dakota plays at HEA-member New Hampshire, Michigan Tech goes home-and-home with Central Collegiate Hockey Association-member Northern Michigan, Denver hosts College Hockey America-member Air Force on Friday and CCHA-member Notre Dame on Saturday, Colorado College hosts CCHA-member Notre Dame on Friday and CHA-member Air Force on Saturday. On Saturday and Sunday, Alaska Anchorage will entertain CCHA-member and in-state rival Alaska Fairbanks in the first round of the annual Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup.

WCHA-member teams had an uncharacteristically-tough go in non-conference play over the Oct. 14-16 weekend, posting just a 5-10-1 mark overall, with four of the losses coming by just one goal and three others by two. At the Nye Frontier Classic at Sullivan Arena, host Alaska Anchorage won 6-3 over Rensselaer last Friday before falling 2-0 to Vermont on Saturday, while Michigan Tech lost 4-3 in overtime to Vermont last Friday and 4-3 to Rensselaer last Saturday. The result for UAA last Friday gave first-year head coach Dave Shyiak a victory in his first game behind the Seawolves' bench. In non-conference series, host North Dakota swept Northeastern, 6-0 and 2-1, host Colorado College split with Ohio State, 2-4 and 1-0, visiting St. Cloud State split with host Northern Michigan, 0-3 and 3-2 (ot), visiting Denver lost twice at Maine, 1-5 and 2-4, host Minnesota lost and tied against Alaska Fairbanks, 3-4 (ot) and 3-3 (ot), and visiting Minnesota State dropped a pair at Bemidji State, 3-4 and 3-7. The victory by the SCSU Huskies last Saturday marked the first win behind the bench for first-year head coach Bob Motzko.

On the opening weekend of Oct. 7-8, WCHA-member teams were 5-5 against outside Div. 1 competition and to date in 2005-06, the league is 10-15-1 (.404) in non-conference play.

Over the past four seasons, WCHA-member teams have enjoyed oustanding success against non-conference Div. 1 opponents. In 2004-05, WCHA-member clubs were 53-17-14 (.714) against outside Div. 1 competition ... in 2003-04, WCHA teams were a combined 60-20-9 (.725) in non-conference play ... in 2002-03, conference teams were 57-27-8 (.663) in non-conference play ... and in 2001-02, WCHA-member teams were 56-24-2 (.695) outside the league circuit.

Minnesota-based WCHA Teams to Compete for Inaugural DQ Cup
The Border battles have raged for decades on the gridiron, but now the sheets of ice across the state are ushering in a new era as the University of Minnesota men's hockey team will compete with the three other Western Collegiate Hockey Association teams in the state of Minnesota this season for the inaugural DQ Cup.

Golden Gopher, Bulldog, Husky and Maverick fans have celebrated the rivalries for years and after March 3 there will be a real piece of hardware sitting in a collegiate trophy case providing year-long bragging rights for the victors. Minnesota State, St. Cloud State, Minnesota Duluth and Minnesota compete in a dozen games that will combine to determine a winner of the DQ Cup.

Here is how it works. The winner of the DQ Cup will be determined on a point system in six head-to-head contests. The winner of each qualifying will receive five DQ Cup points, while the loser will receive zero points. If any of the qualifying games should end in a tie, both teams will receive two points. A tiebreaker system exists if there is a tie for the highest number of total points at the end of the DQ Cup schedule.

Coach Herb Brooks to be Inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The United States Olympic Committee announced today (Oct. 12) that legendary coach Herb Brooks has been selected to the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame. The late Brooks joins the 1984 Men's Gymnastics Olympic Team; Olympians Evelyn Ashford, Rowdy Gaines, Bob Hayes, Shannon Miller and Kristi Yamaguchi; Paralympian Diana Golden-Brosnihan; Jack Shea in the Veterans category; and Special Contributor Dick Ebersol as the Class of 2006.

The group will be honored during the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame Presented by Allstate Induction Ceremony December 8, 2005, at the Harris Theatre in Chicago, Ill.

"Herb Brooks is quite simply one of the greatest hockey coaches who ever lived," said Dave Ogrean, executive director of USA Hockey. "He is the architect of the most famous achievement in American hockey history, and we are extremely pleased to learn that he will be inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame."

Brooks was the architect of one of the most celebrated moments in the history of sport. His direction of the gold-medal-winning U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team at the 1980 Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, N.Y., was achieved with a 6-0-1 overall record and a stunning 4-3 victory against the heavily-favored Soviet Union.

For that tremendous accomplishment, Brooks was presented with the National Hockey League's Lester Patrick Award for his contribution to hockey in the United States. In 1980, Sports Illustrated tabbed Brooks as its Sportsman of the Year and, 20 years later, called the 1980 team's performance the "Greatest Sports Moment of the Century."

Most recently, Brooks led the U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team to the silver medal at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Brooks' other head coaching assignment with USA Hockey came with the U.S. National Team at the 1979 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship. Brooks also skated for the 1964 and 1968 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Teams.

Brooks experienced coaching success at all levels. He helped lead the University of Minnesota to three national championships between 1972-79. Brooks also coached the National Hockey League's Minnesota North Stars (1987-88), New Jersey Devils (1992-93) and Pittsburgh Penguins (1999-00).

In 2003, Brooks died tragically in a car accident in his home state of Minnesota. He was 66.

The U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame was established in 1979 to celebrate the achievements of America's premier athletes in the modern Olympic Games. The first U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame class was inducted in 1983 during ceremonies in Chicago. To date, 182 athletes (including six U.S. teams) and special contributors to the U.S. Olympic Movement have been enshrined. Hall members represent an American honor roll of athletic ambassadors to the ideals of brotherhood and fair play.

Of the 23 schools featured each week generally on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays this season, 13 qualified for the 2005 NCAA tournament.

Four of the regular-season games will be ESPNU original telecasts with commentator duties split among ESPN NHL analyst Barry Melrose, Bob Norton and Dave Shea. The other fourteen regular-season games televised on ESPNU will co-exist with local affiliates. Seven sets of local talent will be utilized to cover the games that will air as co-exists, who will include Jeff Thomas, Pat Sweeney, Dan Parkhurst and Clay Matvick.
