MADISON, Wisc - Already celebrating its 50th anniversary season in 2001-02, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association broke new ground again today (Oct. 22) when five member teams - Minnesota (2nd), St. Cloud State (3rd), North Dakota (4th), Denver (5th) and Colorado College (6th) - were ranked among the top six teams in the country in the latest USA Today/American Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll.

Michigan State University remained atop the poll for the fourth straight week after Head Coach Ron Mason picked up his 900th career win with a 2-0 shutout against Ferris State. Minnesota, 7-2 and 7- 1 winners over Bemidji State last weekend, remained in second, but trimmed the Spartans' lead to just six points.

St. Cloud State, coming off a 7-2, 7-3 conference sweep of visiting Michigan Tech, jumped one spot to No. 3, while North Dakota comes in at No. 4 after the defending WCHA-champion Fighing Sioux split a series with 7th-ranked Maine. The University of Denver, meanwhile, climbed two spots to No. 6 to round out the top-five.

Three other WCHA teams - Minnesota State-Mankato, Michigan Tech and Wisconsin - also received votes in this week's poll.

The seventh annual USA Today/American Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll is conducted each week in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association. The poll includes input from coaches and journalists representing each of the six NCAA Division I ice hockey conferences, as well as composite votes from officers of the American Hockey Coaches Association and American Hockey Magazine, the official publication of USA Hockey.
