MADISON, Wis. – The upcoming Halloween weekend of Oct. 30-Nov. 1 promises plenty of great hockey and plenty of great costumes at Western Collegiate Hockey Association member-team venues as eight of the league’s 10 teams will be in action. Two-game conference series matchups will have pre-season MacNaughton Cup favorite and No. 2/3-ranked Denver (4-2-0, 2-0-0 WCHA) hosting Minnesota State, Mankato (3-3-0, 1-3-0 WCHA) at Magness Arena (6,026) on Friday and Saturday evenings, Michigan Tech (1-3-0, 0-2-0 WCHA) entertaining St. Cloud State (2-2-2, 1-0-1 WCHA) at John MacInnes Student Ice Arena (4,128) on Friday and Saturday, and Minnesota (0-3-1, 0-3-1 WCHA) hosting Alaska Anchorage (3-3-0, 1-1-0 WCHA) at Mariucci Arena (10,000) on Friday night and Sunday afternoon.

In non-conference play Oct. 30-31, No. 19-ranked Wisconsin (1-2-1) will host New Hampshire (2-2-1) of the Hockey East Association at Kohl Center (15,237) while Minnesota Duluth (3-2-1) welcomes Clarkson (3-2-0) of ECAC Hockey to the DECC (Duluth Entertainment & Convention Center (5,303). Both No. 14/15-ranked Colorado College (4-1-1, 3-0-1 WCHA) and No. 2/3-ranked North Dakota (4-1-1, 2-1-1 WCHA) are idle this week.

In league action this past weekend of Oct. 23-24, all 10 teams were engaged in WCHA play, with Colorado College and Denver recording four-point sweeps and St. Cloud State earning three points. The Tigers won twice over visiting Michigan Tech, 4-1 and 8-5; the Pioneers gained a pair of road victories at Minnesota by identical 3-0 scores; and the SCSU Huskies tied and won against visiting Minnesota Duluth, 3-3 (ot) and 4-2. The two other league series ended in splits. North Dakota won 5-0 at Alaska Anchorage last Friday before the Seawolves came back for a 2-1 win on Saturday, while Wisconsin skated to a 6-0 win at Minnesota State last Friday before the Mavericks rallied back for a 3-2 verdict last Saturday.

The Oct. 23-24 weekend marked one of only five weekends during the 140-game 2009-10 conference season that feature all 10 teams playing head-to-head. The other four will occur on Dec. 4-5, Jan. 29-30, Feb. 19-20 and March 5-7, the final weekend of the regular season.

Looking ahead to the weekend of Friday, Nov. 6 and Saturday, Nov. 7, there will be four WCHA series contested as Michigan Tech hosts North Dakota, Denver travels to Alaska Anchorage, Wisconsin entertains Minnesota and Minnesota Duluth visits Colorado College. Minnesota State and St. Cloud State will be idle.

In this week’s (Oct. 26) USCHO.com/CBS College Sports Div. 1 Men’s College Hockey Poll, Denver is No. 2, North Dakota is No. 3, Colorado College is No. 15 and Wisconsin is No. 19. Also receiving votes from the WCHA were Minnesota, St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth.

This 2009-10 campaign marks the 58th in the storied history of the WCHA, with the league owning a record 36 national championships. It will also mark the final season with a membership consisting of 10 teams, as both Bemidji State University and the University of Nebraska-Omaha come on board as the 11th and 12th members in 2010-11.
