MADISON, Wis. - The 2009-10 pre-season MacNaughton Cup favorite Denver Pioneers remain unbeaten through their first three games of the WCHA season after a 4-3 victory over visiting Minnesota State, Mankato at Magness Arena Friday (Oct. 30) night.
In the two other league series being contested over this Halloweeen weekend, host schools Michigan Tech and Minnesota each gained their first conference victories of the new campaign, with the Huskies downing St. Cloud State, 3-1, and the Golden Gophers prevailing by a 5-1 count over Alaska Anchorage.
In non-conference play on Friday evening, host Minnesota Duluth skated past Clarkson, 4-1, while host Wisconsin claimed a 4-1 triumph over New Hampshire. Those two wins give WCHA member teams a combined 14-9-1 mark (.604) in non-conference play so far this season.
On Saturday night in WCHA action, Michigan Tech and St. Cloud State will face-off at 7:07 pm ET at John MacInnes Student Ice Arena while Denver and Minnesota State will get underway at 7:07 pm MT. The second game of the Alaska Anchorage at Minnesota series will be played on Sunday at 4:07 pm CT at Mariucci Arena. In non-conference play tonight, UMD again hosts Clarkson at 7:07 pm CT at the DECC while Wisconsin takes on visiting UNH at 7:07 pm CT at Kohl Center. Both Colorado College and North Dakota are idle this week.
In Denver on Friday night, the Pioneers received seven points from the line of left wing Matt Glasser (1g, 1a), center Jesse Martin (2g, 1a) and right wing Luke Salazar (2a), with Glasser netting the eventual game-winner at 7:20 of the third period, in their 4-3 league win over Minnesota State before 5,803 at Magness Arena. For the Mavericks, linemates Andrew Sackrison (1g, 1a) and Eriah Hayes (1g, 1a) each had two points.
In Houghton, host Michigan Tech received a shorthanded, game-winning goal from center Brett Olson at 5:48 of the third and 26 saves from goaltender Kevin Genoe in a 3-1 victory over St. Cloud State before 1,542 at John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. For SCSU, Garrett Roe had the lone goal, tying the score at 1-1 in the second.
In Minneapolis last night, left winger Tony Lucia scored a pair of shorthanded goals, one of which was the eventual game-winner at 4:47 of the second period, and added one assist while Alex Kangas stopped 22 of 23 shots on goal in a 5-1 win over Alaska Anchorage before 9,710 at Mariucci Arena. For the Seawolves, winger Nick Haddad had the game-opening goal.
In Duluth on Friday, the host UMD Bulldogs outshot Clarkson, 50-17, and had a pair of goals from center Jack Connolly, one of which was the game-winner at 6:35 of period two, in a 4-1 victory before 3,703 at the DECC. Also for UMD, winger Justin Fontaine had two assists.
And in Madison on Friday, the host Wisconsin Badgers outshot New Hampshire, 51-13, enroute to a 4-1 win over New Hampshire before 11,490 at Kohl Center. For the UW, center Derek Stepan scored two goals and left winger John Mitchell knocked home the winner at 12:47 of the second period while defenseman John Ramage had his first collegiate goal.
