Farmington Hills, Mich. – University of Denver junior goaltender Marc Cheverie is the Hockey Commissioners’ Association National Division I Player of the Month for October.
Cheverie posted a 4-0-0 record with a .959 save percentage and 1.27 goals-against average for the No. 2/3 Pioneers. His saves percentage and goals-against average are tops in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and rank second and third in the nation, respectively.
In addition, he registered 223:51 consecutive shutout minutes to break Peter Mannino’s school record of 208:42 set in 2005. During the streak, Cheverie claimed a pair of 3-0 victories over Minnesota to become the first goaltender to shut out the Golden Gophers in consecutive games. The performance earned him WCHA Defensive Player of the Week and Inside College Hockey National Player of the Week honors.
The Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia native, who played junior hockey with the Nanaimo Clippers of the BCHL and was drafted by the NHL’s Florida Panthers in 2006, stopped 139 of the 145 shots he faced during the month, including a season-high 36 saves in a 2-0 road win over Ohio State on Oct. 15. In addition, the Pioneers have yet to allow a power-play goal with Cheverie in net, killing off all 27 man-down situations.
Derek Grant, a freshman forward at Michigan State University, has been named the HCA National Rookie of the Month for October.
Grant began the season on a six-game scoring streak and ranks first among CCHA freshmen with 10 points, including four goals and six assists. His numbers put him in a tie for top-scoring rookie honors in the nation. Grant has done the majority of his scoring on the Spartans’ power-play, registering three goals and four helpers. His 1.25 points-per game average is fourth best nationally among rookies who have appeared in more than one game.
The Abbotsford, British Columbia, native and Ottawa Senators’ 2008 NHL draft pick was named CCHA Rookie of the Week on Oct. 12 after registering two goals and two assists in Michigan State’s sweep of Clarkson to open the season. Grant added two assists in a 5-3 win at Maine to mark his third-consecutive multiple point game. He also registered a goal in the Spartans’ 3-2 overtime win over No. 1 Miami, which was the RedHawks’ first loss of the season.
Grant’s play has helped MSU compile a 6-2-0 record in October, including a 3-1-0-0 mark in CCHA play, which has the Spartans tied for first place in the conference standings.
