MADISON, Wis. – Western Collegiate Hockey Association front-runners Colorado College and North Dakota, along with Michigan Tech and Wisconsin, all earned conference victories on Friday (Nov. 13) evening, with the Tigers and defending MacNaughton Cup champion Fighting Sioux remaining tied for first place as a result.
Colorado College won 1-0 in overtime at Minnesota State, Mankato, host North Dakota doubled up on St. Cloud State, 4-2, visiting Michigan Tech edged Minnesota Duluth, 3-2, and host Wisconsin defeated Alaska Anchorage, 5-1. All four of those series will conclude on Saturday evening.
Also getting underway Saturday will be a two-game non-conference set featuring Minnesota hosting undefeated Bemidji State of College Hockey America – and next season of the WCHA – at Mariucci Arena. The Golden Gophers and Beavers will also play on Sunday evening.
Through games of Nov. 13, just four points separate the top six clubs in the WCHA. Colorado College (6-2-1, 5-1-1 WCHA) and North Dakota (7-1-1, 5-1-1 WCHA) share the top spot with 11 points each, idle Denver (6-3-1, 4-1-1 WCHA) is third with nine points, and Minnesota Duluth (6-4-1, 3-3-1 WCHA), Wisconsin (5-3-1, 3-3-1 WCHA) and Minnesota (3-4-1, 3-4-1 WCHA) are tied in fourth with seven points apiece. St. Cloud State (3-4-2, 2-2-1 WCHA) is seventh with five points, Alaska Anchorage (4-7-0, 2-5-0 WCHA) and Michigan Tech (3-6-0, 2-5-0 WCHA) share eighth with four points, and Minnesota State (3-5-1, 1-5-1 WCHA) is 10th with three.
Looking ahead to next weekend – Nov. 20-21 – there are four WCHA series on the schedule as Minnesota hosts Minnesota Duluth, Wisconsin visits St. Cloud State, Denver hosts North Dakota, and Alaska Anchorage entertains Minnesota State. In non-conference play, the CC Tigers host Robert Morris of College Hockey America.
At Verizon Wireless Center in Mankato on Friday (Nov. 13) night, rookie center Rylan Schwartz scored the game-winner on a power-play at 4:08 of overtime as visiting Colorado College blanked Minnesota State, 1-0, before 4,009. In nets, Joe Howe had a 31-save shutout for the Tigers while Austin Lee had 26 stops for the Mavericks.
At Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks on Friday evening, host North Dakota had two goals from David Toews, including the game-winner at 7:50 of the second period, in a 4-2 WCHA victory over St. Cloud State before a sellout crowd of 11,792. Also for the Sioux, winger Mario Lamoureux had a goal and an assist while for the Huskies, wingers Ryan Lasch and Tony Mosey scored goals.
At the Kohl Center in Madison on Friday night, host Wisconsin received two goals from center Aaron Bendickson and a goal and an assist from winger Craig Smith en route to a 5-1 league win over Alaska Anchorage before 11,870. Smith’s first collegiate goal came just :14 seconds into the opening period followed by the game-winner from defenseman Cody Goloubef at 12:50 of the first. For UAA, center Craig Parkinson broke up the shutout with a power-play tally at 6:54 of the third.
And before 4,490 at the DECC in Duluth on Nov. 13, visiting Michigan Tech earned a 3-2 conference victory over the host UMD Bulldogs despite being outshot, 50-19. The Huskies, who had a 48-save effort from Kevin Genoe between the pipes, scored twice in the third period to rally back from a 2-1 deficit, as Eli Vlaisavljevich knocked home the winner at 14:07. Also for MTU, defenseman Steven Seigo had a goal and an assist while for Minnesota Duluth center Jack Connolly scored in the second period and Mike Seidel in the third.
