MADISON, Wisc. - Top-ranked University of Minnesota (9-0-1) upped it's season-opening unbeaten streak to 10 games Friday (Nov. 16) night as forward John Pohl scored once and also assisted on Barry Tallackson's game-winner in the Golden Gophers' 5-1 WCHA victory over visiting Minnesota-Duluth at Mariucci Arena.
In other conference action on Friday, league-leading and third-ranked St. Cloud State posted a 5-2 road triumph at Alaska Anchorage, defending MacNaughton Cup champion North Dakota doubled up on host Minnesota State-Mankato, 6-3, and visiting Michigan Tech blanked Wisconsin, 1-0. In non- league play, host Colorado College blitzed ECAC-member Clarkson, 6-1.
Tonight's schedule finds UMD at Minnesota, Michigan Tech at Wisconsin, North Dakota at MSU-Mankato, St. Cloud State at Alaska Anchorage, and Clarkson at Colorado College (NC). Denver is idle this weekend. Celebrating its 50th anniversary season, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association currently (Nov. 12 polls) has the nation's top three ranked Div. I men's teams in No. 1 Minnesota, No. 2 Denver (8- 0-0) and No. 3 St. Cloud State (10-1-0) while the Fighting Sioux and the Tigers are also among the top 15 clubs. And so far in 2001-02, WCHA-member teams are a combined 24-6-1 (.790) against non- conference competition.
