MADISON, Wis. – The Western Collegiate Hockey Association today announced it’s players of the week for the period Nov. 17-23, 2009. They are forward Justin Fontaine of the University of Minnesota Duluth, St. Cloud State goaltender Dan Dunn on defense, and Colorado College goaltender Joe Howe as rookie.
Red Baron® WCHA Offensive Player of the Week
Justin Fontaine, Jr., F, Minnesota Duluth
University of Minnesota Duluth right winger Justin Fontaine, who scored four goals and produced five points to lead the Bulldogs to a conference win over Michigan Tech last weekend, is the Red Baron® WCHA Offensive Player of the Week for Nov. 17-23, 2009.
A 5-11, 175-pound junior from Bonnyville, Alberta, Fontaine scored four goals in UMD’s 8-1 win over the visiting Huskies on Saturday (Nov. 14) night at the DECC in Duluth, becoming only the ninth Bulldog ever to do so and the first in almost 12 years. One of his goals proved to be the game-winner and he also added an assist for five points – one point shy of the school record of six points in one game.
In addition to his five points, Fontaine also fired 12 shots on goal in the series and was a +1 in plus/minus.
Tied for the overall scoring lead among WCHA players with 18 points (11g, 7a), Fontaine also currently leads all Div. 1 men’s players in goals (11), points (18), and power-play goals (8).
Also nominated this week were: David Towes, F, UND; Ryan Lasch, F, SCSU; and Ben Street, F, UW.
Red Baron® WCHA Defensive Player of the Week
Dan Dunn, Jr., G, St. Cloud State
St. Cloud State University goaltender Dan Dunn, who made a career-high 47 saves while backstopping the visiting Huskies to a key conference road victory at No. 2-ranked North Dakota last weekend, has been chosen as the Red Baron® WCHA Defensive Player of the Week for Nov. 17-23, 2009.
Dunn, a 6-5, 200-pound junior from Oshawa, Ontario and a draftee of the NHL’s Washington Capitals, won his third consecutive game last Saturday (Nov. 14) night at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, making period save totals of 20, 15 and 12 and blanking the Fighting Sioux on all six of their power-play chances. He was named the First Star of the Game. Of note, UND’s second goal came at 18:16 of the third period after the Sioux had pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker.
On the 2009-10 season, Dunn now owns a 3-1-0 record overall, a 1.99 goals-against average, and a .938 saves percentage, which ranks second among WCHA netminders overall.
Also nominated this week were: Nate Proesser, D, CC; Brady Lamb, D, UMD; Brad Eidsness, G, UND; and Cody Goloubef, D, UW.
Red Baron® WCHA Rookie of the Week
Joe Howe, Fr., G, Colorado College
Colorado College goaltender Joe Howe, who led his team to a two-game conference road sweep at Minnesota State, Mankato last weekend, is the Red Baron® WCHA Rookie of the Week for Nov. 17-23, 2009. This marks the second time this season Howe has won the award (also on Oct. 20).
A 5-11, 190-pound freshman from Plymouth, Minn., Howe stopped 59 of 62 shots on goal in the two victories for a .952 saves percentage, posted five shutout periods (including one in overtime), and surrendered just one even-strength goal.
He gained his first collegiate shutout with a 31-save, 1-0 overtime victory over the host Mavericks last Friday (Nov. 13) night at Verizon Wireless Center in Mankato. Seventeen of those stops came in the second period.
Then last Saturday (Nov. 14) evening, Howe again got the start in nets for the Tigers, recording 28 saves – including a third period penalty shot – while backstopping CC to a 3-2 win over MSU. He was named the First Star of the Game.
On the 2009-10 season, Howe leads all WCHA goaltenders in wins overall (7-1-1) and minutes played (548), ranks third in saves percentage (.934), and is sixth in goals-against average at 2.08.
Also nominated this week was: Craig Smith, F, UW.
