MADISON, Wis. -- Head Coach Jeff Sauer announced today the signing of center Alex Leavitt (Edmonton, Alberta) to a national letter of intent to play hockey at Wisconsin. Leavitt has spent the last three years playing for Athol Murray College of Notre Dame, which also produced former Badger Curtis Joseph.

Leavitt is a 5-10, 165-pound 16-year-old who has 7-9=16 for the Notre Dame Hounds Jr. A team so far this season. As a Bantam (1998-99) and Midget (1999-2000), he led both of his Notre Dame teams in scoring and was also named to all-star teams in both of those seasons. During the 1998-99 season, he led the South Saskatchewan Hockey League in scoring with 25-37=62 in leading the Hounds to a first-place finish with a 17-3-2 mark. Last year, he paced his midget team with 29-43=72. As a 15-year-old, he led the Saskatchewan Junior League in scoring during the playoffs.

He is a strong candidate for Team Pacific (to be announced later this week), which is a top Under-17 team made up of the best 20 players in British Columbia and Alberta. This team also serves as a selection camp for the Canadian National Junior Team which will be named in December. Dany Heatley, who became the first Badger ever to play for a Canadian National Junior Team, is likely to be a member of that team again this year.

Leavitt, whose younger brother also plays hockey at Notre Dame, enjoys golf (has a 7 handicap), winning the Edmonton Golf and Country Club Championship last summer. The three-year honor roll student was born on 1-31-84.

Edmonton has produced a number of key players for the UW hockey program over the years, including current UW junior winger David Hukalo and former Badger all-American centers Steve Reinprecht (1996-2000), Gary Shuchuk (1986-90) and goaltender Julian Baretta (1975-79). Reinprecht is currently playing with the NHL's Los Angeles Kings.
