MADISON, Wis. -- A second player has signed a National of Intent to play for the University of Wisconsin. Center Ryan MacMurchy (Regina, Saskatchewan) joins Alex Leavitt as part of the incoming class for the 2001-2002 season. The highly-touted forward was recruited by six of the top-10 (preseason polls) hockey programs in the United States.

MacMurchy is a 5-11, 185-pound forward who is spending the 2000-01 season with the Vernon Vipers in the British Columbia Junior Hockey League (BCJHL). One of the youngest players on the Vipers' roster this season, the 17-year old has 1-12=13 in 21 games so far this season. Vernon is currently second in their division with an 11-10-1 mark.

The previous two seasons (1998-99 and 1999-2000), MacMurchy played for the Regina Pat Canadians Midget AAA squad where he scored 18-15=33 (40 games) and 23-44=67 (38 games), respectively. During the 1998-99 season, MacMurchy helped guide his team to the Air Canada Cup, which is given to the national midget AAA champions. In that championship game, Regina trailed 4-3 before MacMurchy tied the game sending it into overtime where the Pat Canadians eventually won it, 5-4 in double overtime.

Also during the 1999 season, he played for Team Western (composed of players from Manitoba and Saskatchewan) in the Under-17 World Championship Tournament in Ontario.

MacMurchy played slotback for the highly regarded Leboldus High School Golden Suns football team as a freshman and sophomore. He will graduate from Leboldus in the spring.

Regina's David Smith also played for the Wisconsin Badgers from 1967-70. In 93 career games, he scored 27-46=73 and was a member of the first-ever UW team to win the WCHA Playoff Championship and earn a berth into the NCAA tournament (1969-70).
