MADISON, Wisc. - The No. 1-ranked University of Minnesota (11-0-2 overall) men's hockey team stretched their season-opening unbeaten streak to 13 games over the Thanksgiving weekend with a strong showing in the annual College Hockey Showcase. Coach Don Lucia's Golden Gophers recorded a 5-2 victory over Michigan last Friday (Nov. 23) followed by a 4-4 tie at Michigan State on Sunday (Nov. 25). Minnesota's 13-game unbeaten streak to start the season is their best since 1939-40, when they went 18-0-0 on the year.
Another tough assignment is in store for Minnesota this coming weekend as the 2001-02 schedule heads into December. The Golden Gophers will take on No. 3-ranked (Nov. 19 Div. I polls) and league- leading St. Cloud State (11-1-0) in a pair of home-and-home tilts this Friday (Nov. 30) and Saturday (Dec. 1). That two-game set will be one of five head-to-head WCHA matchups, which also include No. 2-ranked Denver (Nov. 19 polls) heading to Minnesota-Duluth, defending MacNaughton Cup-champion North Dakota hosting Minnesota State-Mankato, Colorado College traveling to Michigan Tech, and Alaska Anchorage entertaining Wisconsin. The Pioneers (9-1-0) improved their season-opening winning streak to nine games last Friday with a 4-1 triumph over Vermont in the opening game of the New Hampshire Tournament before suffering their first loss Sunday to UNH, 5-2.
On-coming Colorado College (7-5-0), meanwhile, pushed its winning streak to five games last weekend with a 7-1, 4-2 home sweep over UAA. Coach Scott Owens' Tigers were the pre-season choice of league head coaches to win the WCHA title.
Through Nov. 25, WCHA-member teams have a combined
28-11-2 (.690) record in non-
conference play. And coupled
with a 69-40-9 non-league mark
in 2000-01, the WCHA is 97-51-
11 (.645) vs outside opponents
the past 159 games.
