MADISON, Wisc. - The nation's only remaining unbeaten team - the University of Minnesota - remained atop this week's (Nov. 27) two Div. I men's college hockey polls - the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine and USCHO.com rankings - following the Golden Gophers' strong showing in the annual College Hockey Showcase over the Thanksgiving weekend. Minnesota won 5-2 at Michigan last Friday night and tied 4-4 at Michigan State on Sunday to extend their season-opening unbeaten streak to 13 games at 11-0-2.
The Golden Gophers face another tough test this coming weekend - Friday, Nov. 30 and Saturday, Dec. 1 - when they play a home-and-home WCHA set against second-ranked St. Cloud State. The Huskies (11-1-0) moved up one spot to No. 2 in both polls while idle from competition last week.
The University of Denver (9-1-0) is ranked fourth in both Nov. 27 polls. The Pioneers, who had fashioned a school-best nine-game winning streak to start the 2001-02 season before a 5-2 setback at New Hampshire on Sunday, were No. 2 a week ago.
Two other WCHA Teams - defending MacNaughton Cup champion North Dakota and pre-season league coaches' favorite Colorado College - were also again among the nation's top 15. The Fighting Sioux are 9th in the USCHO.com poll and 10th in the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine poll while the on-coming Tigers (five straight wins) are 11th in the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine ranking and 12th in the USCHO.com poll. Also receiving votes again this week was Wisconsin.
Celebrating it's 50th anniversary season and home to 31 national championship teams since 1951,
WCHA-member teams currently sport a combined 28-12-2 record in non-conference games so far this
season.
