MADISON, Wisc. - In a classic Friday (Nov. 30) night Western Collegiate Hockey Association battle, staged before a record crowd of 10,231 at Minnesota's Mariucci Arena, the No. 1-ranked Golden Gophers (11-1-2) suffered their first loss of the 2001-02 season when second-ranked St. Cloud State (12-1-0) prevailed, 3-2, behind 37 saves from G Dean Weasler and a second period game-winning power-play goal from F Matt Hendricks. Minnesota and St. Cloud State will go at it again tonight at 7:05 pm CT, but this time the scene shifts to the Huskies' National Hockey Center.

Elsewhere around the conference last night, No. 4-ranked Denver pushed it's overall mark to 10-1- 0 with an 8-2 victory at Minnesota-Duluth, 11th-ranked Colorado College extended it's unbeaten streak to six (5-0-1) games with a 2-2 tie at Michigan Tech, visiting Minnesota State-Mankato upended 9th- ranked North Dakota, 6-4, and host Alaska Anchorage skated to a 4-1 triumph over Wisconsin.

St. Cloud State continues to lead the race for the MacNaughton Cup with 20 points achieved in 11 games played, followed by Denver (14 points, 7 gp), Minnesota (11 points, 7 gp), North Dakota (9 points, 9 gp), Wisconsin (8 points, 7 gp), Colorado College (7 points, 9 gp), MSU-Mankato (7 points, 9 gp), Alaska Anchorage (5 points, 9 gp), Michigan Tech (4 points, 9 gp) and Minnesota-Duluth (1 point, 9 gp). The conference season consists of 28 games.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary season here in 2001-02, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association currently (Nov. 27 polls) currently has five teams ranked among the nation's top 15 in the two weekly Div. I polls, including No. 1 Minnesota, No. 2 St. Cloud State and No. 4 Denver. In addition, WCHA- member teams are a combined 28-12-2 against non-conference competition this season.
