MADISON, Wisc. - Second-ranked St. Cloud State prevailed in their weekend battle against No. 1-ranked Minnesota as the Huskies took three of our points in the home-and-home Western CollegiateHockey Association series played before two sellout crowds. SCSU ended the Golden Gophers' 13-game unbeaten streak to start the season last Friday (Nov. 30) night with a 3-2 victory before 10,231 at Mariucci Arena and then the two clubs played to a 2-2 overtime tie before 6,685 at the National Hockey Center on Saturday (Dec. 1) evening. The results boosted the league-leading Huskies to 12-1-1 overall and 10-1-1 in the WCHA while Minnesota now stands 11-1-3 overall and 5-1-2 in league play.

Elsewhere around the loop this past weekend, fourth-ranked Denver remained perfect in WCHA games and moved to within five points of first place with a 8-2, 3-1 sweep at Minnesota-Duluth, Colorado College extended it's unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-1) with a 2-2 draw and 3-1 win at Michigan Tech, Minnesota State-Mankato posted a first-ever road sweep (6-4, 6-0) over defending MacNaughton Cup-champion North Dakota, and host Alaska Anchorage enjoyed a successful series against visiting Wisconsin with a 4-1 victory and 3-3 tie. Together, the current top three in the WCHA - St. Cloud State, Denver and Minnesota - are a combined 34-3-4.

Up next on the 2001-02 scheduleare four Dec. 7-8 conference series and one non-conference set. In WCHA matchups, St. Cloud State travels to Colorado College, Minnesota journeys to Denver, Wisconsin entertains North Dakota, and Alaska Anchorage heads to MSU-Mankato. The one non-conference series finds Minnesota-Duluth playing host to College Hockey America-member Bemidji State. Michigan Tech, meanwhile, is idle.

Through games of Dec. 2, WCHA-member teams have a combined 28-11-2 (.690) record in non-conference play so far this season and are 97-51-11 (.645) vs outside opponents over the past two years.
