MADISON, Wisc. - Four of the nation's top-ranked teams - St. Cloud State, Minnesota, Denver and Colorado College - went head-to-head in the Rocky Mountain state over the Dec. 7-8 weekend, and perhaps fittingly, both series ended in splits. In Colorado Springs, No. 1-ranked (Dec. 3 national polls) St. Cloud State won 3-0 over No. 10 Colorado College last Friday night before the Tigers stormed back to claim a 5-1 triumph on Saturday. And in the Mile High City, second-ranked Minnesota handed No. 2/3 Denver it's first league defeat of the season, 2-1, last Friday before the host Pioneers battled back for a 4-3 win on Saturday. The result? The Huskies maintained their five-point lead over DU in the race for the 2001-02 MacNaughton Cup while Minnesota remained four points back of DU in third and CC served another notice with their second win against SCSU this season.
Wisconsin, however, ultimately gained the most ground in the WCHA over the weekend as the Badgers took their two-game home set against defending WCHA-champion North Dakota, 7-6 ot and 3-1.
Those two victories, which included a rally from a 6-2 third period deficit last Friday (Dec. 7) night, moved the UW into sole possession of 4th place and also gave them the season series with the Sioux, 3-1.The only other league seriescontested Dec. 7-8 saw Alaska Anchorage split (2-1, 3-5) at Min-nesota State Mankato. Both of those clubs have been on the upswing, with the Seawolvesnow 2-1-1 over their last four WCHA contests while the Mavericks are 3-1-1 over their last five league matchups.
In non-conference play, meanwhile, host Minnesota-Duluth snapped a 10-game winlessstreak (0-9-1) with 5-1 and 7-2 victories over Bemidji State. The Dec. 14-15 schedule findsDenver heading to MSU Mankato in the only WCHA series while non-conference encounters have North Dakota traveling to ECAC-member St.Lawrence, Michigan Tech playing home-and-home against CCHA-member Northern Michigan, and St. Cloud State engaging Bemidji State in another home-and-home encounter.
Through Dec. 10, WCHA teams have a 30-12-2 (.705) combined record in non-conference play this season and are 99-52-11 (.645) over the past two years.
