WCHA Offensive Player of the Week
Tom Nelson, F, Minnesota-Duluth

University of Minnesota-Duluth forward Tom Nelson, who led all league players over the weekend with with five goals and six scoring points in a two-game sweep over Bemidji State, has been selected as the WCHA Offensive Player of the Week for Dec. 10-16.

A 6-0, 190-pound senior from Superior, Wisc., Nelson notched a 'natural' hat trick with three consecutive goals in a 5-1 triumph last Friday (Dec. 7) evening at the DECC and also assisted on teammate Jon Francisco's game-opening tally in the first period. His three goals also all came on the power-play to equal a UMD single-game record for PPGs.

Last Saturday (Dec. 8) night in Duluth, Nelson scored two more goals to help power the Bulldogs to a 7-2 win and a sweep of the weekend series - giving him five goals and one assist on the weekend.

On the season, Nelson is averaging 1.07 points per game with seven goals, nine assists and 16 points in 15 games.

Minnesota-Duluth is now idle until they host the annual Silverado Shootout in Duluth on Dec. 28-29 against Boston College, Miami and Yale.

WCHA Defensive Player of the Week
Aaron MacKenzie, D, Denver

University of Denver junior defenseman Aaron MacKenzie, who was a factor at both ends of the ice in a pair of key league games against visiting Minnesota last weekend, has been named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week for Dec. 10-16.

A 6-0, 191-pound native of Terrace Bay, Ont., MacKenzie played a large role in holding the high-scoring Golden Gophers to just five goals in a 2-1 setback last Friday (Dec. 7) and a 4-3 victory on Saturday (Dec. 8) and keeping the nation's best power-play scoreless in nine weekend opportunities overall.

An alternate captain, MacKenzie was also credited with nine hits, one blocked shot, and two scoring points in the two-game series that featured two of the nation's top three-ranked teams. He assisted on Denver's lone goal last Friday and then scored an insurance goal on Saturday to help the Pioneers to the victory.

Denver, now 12-2-0 overall and 9-1-0 (2nd) in the WCHA, next heads to Minnesota State-Mankato for a two-game conference series on Dec. 14-15.

WCHA Rookie of the Week
Alex Leavitt, F, Wisconsin

Alex Leavitt, a freshman center for the University of Wiconsin, has been honored as the WCHA Rookie of the Week for Dec. 10-16 as a result of his outstanding efforts in a pair of conference victories over North Dakota last weekend in Madison, Wisc.

A 5-10, 165-pounder from Edmonton, Alta., Leavitt topped all first-year players in the league with four scoring points in the series on two goals and two assists as the host Badgers improved to 6-3-1 in the WCHA (8-7-1) overall and moved into sole possession of fourth place.

Last Friday (Dec. 7) night at the Kohl Center, Leavitt made a key contribution with two goals and one assist in a game that saw the UW score four times in the third period to erase a 6-2 deficit and earn a 7-6 win in overtime.

On Saturday (Dec. 8) evening, Leavitt earned another assist - this time on teammate Rene Bourque's game-winning goal at 13:43 of the third period - as Wisconsin completed the sweep with a 3-1 win over the Fighting Sioux.

On the season, Leavitt is is tied four sixth in scoring among WCHA rookies with 12 points (6g,6a) in 16 games played.
