MADISON, Wisc. - Although there was only one Western Collegiate Hockey Association series contested over the Dec. 14-15 weekend, the 6-1 and 5-2 road victories posted by third-ranked (Dec. 10 polls) University of Denver over Minnesota State-Mankato enabled the Pioneers to climb within one point of first place in the conference race. Denver, now 14-2-0 overall and 11-1-0 in league play as a result of those two wins, also still has two games in hand current league-leader, St. Cloud State.

The No. 1-ranked Huskies, meanwhile, will have an opportunity to put some more breathing room between themselves and the Pioneers this coming weekend - Dec. 21-22 - when they host MSU- Mankato at the National Hockey Center in the only on-ice action involving league teams prior to the Holiday break. Faceoff is 7:05 pm CT both Friday and Saturday nights. Through games of Dec. 16, St. Cloud State (14 gp, 23 points) holds first place in the MacNaughton Cup race, followed by Denver (12 gp, 22 points) in second place, Minnesota (10 gp, 14 points) in third, Wisconsin (10 gp, 13 points) in fourth, and Colorado College (12 gp, 11 points) and MSU-Mankato (14 gp, 11 points) tied for fifth.

In addition to Denver's sweep last weekend, three other clubs - North Dakota, St. Cloud State and Michigan Tech - combined for a 5-1-0 record in non-conference competition.
