MADISON, Wisc.- As the Western Collegiate Hockey Association pauses for the upcoming holidays, the race for the 2000-01 MacNaughton Cup has taken on a few new twists. Most notably are the recent surges by the University of Denver and St. Cloud State University, two teams that have vaulted into prominent positions over the past few weeks.

The Pioneers (9-7-2 overall), sporting an unbeaten streak of nine games (7-0-2), have climbed into sole possession of second place in the WCHA after a three-point weekend (Dec. 15-16) at Minnesota-Duluth while the SCSU Huskies (13-4-1 overall) have jumped up to a third place tie following a weekend sweep over visiting Alaska Anchorage.

Heading into the break, defending NCAA champion North Dakota's 21 points leads second place DenverŐs 17, followed by a four-way tie for third with 16 points each between Colorado College, Minnesota, St. Cloud State and defending MacNaughton Cup champion Wisconsin.

Elsewhere over the Dec. 15-17 weekend, MSU Mankato took a pair of non-conference games from visiting Bemidji State to boost their overall record to 10-8-0, giving the WCHA a total of seven teams with winning overall records at the holidays.

RUSSIAN SELECT TEAM TOUR CONCLUDES DEC. 19
The Russia Select Team's WCHA/USA Tour concludes this week with games at St. Cloud State today (Dec. 18) and at Minnesota State, Mankato on Tuesday (Dec. 19). The Russian's five-game tour got underway in Minneapolis on Dec. 10 in a 5-4 loss at Minnesota, followed by a 5-1 win at Wisconsin on Dec. 12 and a 3-0 victory against the U.S. National Development Team in Ann Arbor on Dec. 13.
