MADISON, Wisc.--The No. 1-ranked and league-leading St. Cloud State Huskies (16-2-1 overall) received a goal and an assist from both Ryan Malone and Matt Gens and 23 saves from goaltender Dean Weasler on Friday (Dec. 21) night enroute to a 3-1 conference victory over visiting Minnesota State-Mankato before a sellout crowd of 6,011 at the National Hockey Center. The two teams will conclude their series Saturday (Dec. 22) night with faceoff set for 7:05 pm CT. Friday's win guarantees SCSU at least a three-point lead in the race for the MacNaughton Cup heading into the second half of the 2001-02 campaign. Following tonight's contest, the league will break for the holidays before resuming competition with a host of holiday events. Wisconsin welcomes Colorado College, New Hampshire and Brown to the Bank One Badger Hockey Showdown in Milwaukee, Dec. 27-28, Michigan Tech hosts North Dakota, Michigan and Michigan State in the Great Lakes Invitational in Detroit, Dec. 28-29, Minnesota hosts Western Michigan, Ferris State and Providence in the Mariucci Classic, Dec. 28-29, Denver will host Bowling Green, UMass- Lowell and Harvard in the Wells Fargo Denver Cup, Dec. 28-29, and Minnesota-Duluth welcomes Boston College, Miami and Yale to the Silverado Shootout, Dec. 28-29.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary season in 2001-02, and home to a record 31 national championship teams since 1951, the WCHA currently has the nation's top three ranked Div. I men's teams in No. 1 St. Cloud State, No. 2 Minnesota and No. 3 Denver, while Colorado College is ranked 10th. A year ago, the WCHA became the first conference in Div. I hockey history to qualify five teams for the NCAA tournament.
