MADISON, Wisc. - Four Western Collegiate Hockey Association teams - Denver, Michigan Tech, Minnesota and Wisconsin - take aim at closing out the 2000 calendar year by winning their own tournaments Saturday (Dec. 30) night. Colorado College, meanwhile, looks for a sweep over visiting Harvard.

The Pioneers, having extended their unbeaten streak to 10 games (8-0-2) with a 5-2 win over Air Force Friday evening, face Providence in the championship game of the Wells Fargo Denver Cup at Magness Arena tonight at 7:05 pm MT. A pair of senior forwards - Bjorn Engstrom (2-2=4) and Kelly Popadynetz (1-2=3) - led the DU attack Friday. Michigan Tech, behind two goals each from forwards Matt Ulwelling and Jarrett Weinberger, upended Michigan, 7-3, Friday night at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit - advancing the Huskies to the Great Lakes Invitational Tournament title game for the first time since 1991. Tech will take on No. 1-ranked Michigan State tonight at 7:30 pm ET.

At the Mariucci Classic Friday, Minnesota rallied behind a pair of goals from center Erik Westrum to post a 3-2 victory over Union College and move the Golden Gophers into the championship game against Lake Superior State tonight at 7:05 pm CT.

At the Bank One Badger Hockey Showdown at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee Friday, Wisconsin erupted for five first period goals - including two from forward Kent Davyduke - to skate past Princeton, 6-3, and vault into tonight's title contest against Boston University at 8:05 pm CT. In the first game, BU tallied three times in the final 7:51 to upend North Dakota, 4-3.

At the Silverado Shootout at the DECC in Duluth, host Minnesota-Duluth finished third after a 2-2 overtime tie with Colgate on Friday. And in Colorado Springs on Friday, host Colorado College had a goal and an assist from both Justin Morrison and Alex Kim to defeat Harvard, 5-3.
