MADISON, Wisc. - Denver, Minnesota and North Dakota all brought home holiday tournament championships over the Dec. 28-29 weekend and in the process, helped the Western Collegiate Hockey Association improve it's 2001-02 non-conference record to 42-18-2 (.694). The No. 3-ranked and host Pioneers downed Bowling Green (3-1) and UMass-Lowell (2-1) to win the Wells Fargo Denver Cup at Magness Arena, the No. 2-ranked and host Golden Gophers skated past Ferris State (3-2) and Providence (6-1) to capture the Mariucci Classic at Mariucci Arena, and the defending WCHA-champion Fighting Sioux earned victories over Michigan (5-4 ot) and Michigan State (5-4 ot) to claim the Great Lakes Invitational crown at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

Two other holiday tournaments contested over the weekend - the Bank One Badger Hockey Showdown in Milwaukee and the Silverado Shootout in Duluth - resulted in wins by non-conference teams. New Hampshire took the Badger Hockey Showdown at the Bradley Center by defeating Colorado College (6-2) and Brown (11-3) while Boston College won the Silverado Shootout at the DECC with wins over Miami and host Minnesota-Duluth (5-1).

Following the New Year's holiday, play resumes in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association with three series set for Friday- Sunday, Jan. 4-6. On Friday and Saturday, Denver hosts Wisconsin and Michigan Tech plays at Alaska Anchorage, while on Saturday and Sunday, Minnesota hosts North Dakota. Two other league teams - St. Cloud State and Minnesota State-Mankato - will be engaged in non-conference play. The Huskies host Hockey East Association-member UMass-Amherst and the USA Development Team while the Mavericks play at College Hockey America-member Alabama-Huntsville.
