MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Top-seeded Minnesota advanced to the WCHA Women's Playoff Championship semifinals with a 6-3 win over No. 8 Bemidji State.
The Beavers opened the scoring at 1:23 of the first period on a goal by Ashley Medori. Kate Robinson added the assist. Minnesota evened the score less than a minute later on a goal from Krissy Wendell at 2:06 on a pass from Kelly Stephens. Bemidji State took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission as Kelly Hart tallied at the 18:12 mark. Minnesota came out strong in the second period as Stephens lit the lamp just 40 seconds into the stanza. Stephens then tallied her second of the night at 9:33 and Erika McKenzie put the Gophers ahead to stay with a goal at 11:06. Natalie Darwitz added an insurance goal at 17:35 of the third period. Bemidji State's Jenny Schnickel added a power play goal at 19:58 to close out the game.
Minnesota's Brenda Reinen earned the victory in net with 20 saves. Bemidji State's Emily Brookshaw made 23 saves before Jill Luebke came into the game in the third period, making 14 saves.
Minnesota improves to 31-2-2 on the season while Bemidji State ends the campaign with a 9-24-2 overall record. Minnesota will meet the winner of the game between No. 4 Ohio State and No. 5 Minnesota State on Saturday at 7 p.m.
