The University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team played in just its second Western Collegiate Hockey Association Third Place Game today and defeated Ohio State University, 5-0, to win earn Third Place in the WCHA Tournament.

The first period of the game was uneventful as there were no goals and even no penalties called in the first 20 minutes of the hard fought game. Both teams had several scoring chances, but were unable to get anything by the goaltenders.

That is, until there was just 39 seconds remaining in the stanza. Julianne Vasichek sent a rink wide pass up to Noemie Marin, who drove up the left side and shot a quick pass to Caroline Ouellette who tipped it in right in front of Buckeye netminder Melissa Glaser.

Less than two minutes into the period Karine Demeule was called for the first penalty of the game and the Badgers went on the power play. But it would be the Bulldogs who would capitalize on the extra space on the ice as rookie defenseman Rachael Drazan scored her second goal of the tournament and her first career short-handed goal. Drazan picked up a pass from Ouellette, similar to the pass Marin made to score the first UMD goal of the game, and buried it in the back of the netting.

UMD would go up 3-0 less than two minutes later as Ouellette earned her second goal of the game with familiar assists from Marin and Demeule, who had just been let out of the penalty box.

The Bulldogs would go up 4-0 early in the third as Marin scored her own goal after earning two assists at 6:53 in the third on the power play. Marin tipped in a pass from Ouellette who was standing on the right side of the net and tipped it up after a quick pass from Allison Lehrke at the point.

Lehrke would then earn a goal of her own as she sent in a one timer on the left side of the net with 6:42 remaining in the third period. It was her fifth power-play goal of the year.

That is how the game would end, with the Bulldogs earning a 5-0 victory over the Buckeyes to earn Third Place in the WCHA Tournament. Schaublin earned her seventh shut-out of the year by stopping all 18 shots she faced in 60 minutes of play.

Notes: The All-Tournament Team will be announced after the completition of the Championship Game'more to follow.
