Madison, Wis. - The Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) will be well represented at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy, with 17 current or former conference standouts representing six different countries and one additional athlete involved as an alternate. The 2006 Winter Olympics will be held February 10-26.

The U.S. Olympic Women's Hockey Team features seven players with WCHA ties. Minnesota Duluth's Jenny Potter (F, Edina, Minn.) is making her third trip to the Olympic Winter Games as she was a member of the Gold Medal winning team in 1998 and earned a Silver Medal in 2002. Minnesota's Krissy Wendell (F, Brooklyn Park, Minn.), Natalie Darwitz (F, Eagan, Minn.), Lyndsay Wall (D, Churchville, N.Y.) and Courtney Kennedy (D, Woburn, Mass.) won Silver at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Wisconsin's Molly Engstrom (D, Siren, Wis.) and Minnesota's Kelly Stephens (F, Seattle, Wash.) are making their first appearance on the U.S. Women's Hockey Team at the Olympic Games. Wendell is also serving as the U.S. team captain.

The Canadian National Team includes Minnesota Duluth's Caroline Ouellette (D, Montreal, Quebec) and Wisconsin's Carla MacLeod (D, Calgary, Alberta). Ouellette was a member of the 2002 Canadian Gold Medal winning squad while MacLeod is making her first trip to the Olympic Games.

Minnesota Duluth's Erika Holst (F, Varberg, Sweden) and Maria Rooth (F, Angelholm, Sweden) have been named to Sweden's National Team while Minnesota Duluth's Michaela Lanzl (F, Geretsmed, Germany) will represent Germany at the Games. Former Minnesota Duluth players Nora Tallus (F, Kerava, Finland) and Satu Kiipeli (D, Oulu, Finland) along with current Bulldog, Mari Pehkonen (F, Tampere, Finland) have been named to Finland's Olympic team. Rounding out Minnesota Duluth's representation at the Games is Patricia Sautter-Elsmore (G, Schaffhausen, Switzerland) who has been named to Switzerland's Olympic team.

Ohio State's Emma Laaksonen (D, Espoo, Finland) has also been named to Finland's Olylmpic Team and is making her third apperance in the Olympic Winter Games. Bemidji State's Nina Ziegenhals (D, Sankt Augustin, Germany) is the first alternate for Team Germany.

The women's hockey tournament at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games will feature eight teams divided into two groups. Each team will play the other teams in their group once during the preliminary round. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals. The winning teams will meet for the Gold Medal while the losing teams will play in the Bronze Medal Game.
